Cariçal est un petit village situé au sud-est de l'île de Sao Nicolau au Cap-Vert. Le cap-Vert est quant à lui l'un des plus gros hotspots de ponte des tortues marines Careta Careta. Et sur la mini plage de ce petit village, une centaine de tortue Careta Careta aussi appelée "Caouane" vient gravir les pente de la plage chaque année pour creuser un nid et y pondre entre 59 et 80 oeufs. Lors de l'une de nos croisières, nous y avons rencontré un agent d'une organisation de protection des tortues qui effectue ici et depuis de nombreuses années un travail aussi discret que remarquable. Chaque nuit il surveille les montée de tortues, les aide au besoin durant leur tâche pour creuser leur trou et place un repère sur le lieu précis de leur nid. Au lendemain, il viendra creuser les nids des tortues afin de récupérer les oeufs déposés durant la nuit par la femelle. Ces oeufs, il les placera dans un autre nid qu'il aura creusé lui-même dans le sable de la plage et autour duquel il aura placé un grillage dont le rôle est d'empêcher les crabes de passer. Un premier prédateur est ainsi évité. Une cinquantaine de jours plus tard, il creusera de nouveau ce nid afin de contrôler l'éclosion des bébés tortues, les récupérera et les déposera lui-même sur la plage, veillant ainsi à ce que les chiens et les oiseaux ne viennent pas en profiter. Deux nouveaux prédateurs sont ainsi éviter. Pour le reste, ce sera aux tortues bébés d'outrepasser les prédateurs marins, comme les gros poissons, les requins et les oiseaux marins... Une vie qui peut très vite s'arrêter là où elle a commencer... A life that can quickly end where it started...
