Leía el post de @syllem sobre la gatita Cloe y pensaba en lo real que es eso de que una mascota te cambia los esquemas. Recordar su historia me dio nostalgia, pero también una sonrisa, porque vaya que era un personaje.

## La aventura en la montaña # Hubo un día en la cabaña de mi hermana en las montañas, que nos dio el susto de la vida. Cuando nos dimos cuenta, se armó el caos. Salimos a buscarlo, algunos a pie y otros, en carro. Yo me quedé en la casa esperando por si regresaba. Cayó la noche con una neblina densa y el miedo de que no encontrara el camino de regreso nos tenía con el alma pendiendo de un hilo. El silencio en la cabaña ensordecía.

La tranquilidad volvió a nuestras vidas con una llamada: un vecino lo había encontrado muy lejos. El muchacho se había ido a visitar a otros perros y los dueños de esa casa lo habían tenido bajo cuidado. Cuando regresó, estaba vuelto un desastre de lo sucio, pero él, muy feliz de la vida. Esa noche durmió como un rey en su camita, ajeno al susto que nos había metido.

## El final del camino # El tiempo no perdona y el año pasado el cuerpo le pasó factura. A sus 16 años ya estaba un poco ciego, sordo y con los pasos lentos. Su final llegó de golpe tras una caída por las escaleras. Al llevarlo al veterinario descubrimos que tenía una fractura de cadera y los riñones colapsados por un cuadro renal crónico. Tuvimos que dejarlo hospitalizado y, dos noches después, solo dejó de respirar, creo que estaba cansado. Se fue en paz, calladito y sin hacer ruido, exactamente de la misma forma en que vivió.

## Su huella # Max no tenía dueños; tenía una mamá y unos hermanos que lo adoptamos como uno más. Hoy ya no está su camita, ni lo veo temblar cuando se emocionaba, ni siento su patita reclamando atención o sus celos cuando olía a otro perro. Pero se quedan 16 años de un compañero fiel que nos enseñó lo que es el amor incondicional. Se fue con el corazón cansado, pero nosotros nos quedamos con el alma llena de gratitud por haberlo tenido.

I was reading @syllem's post about Cloe the kitty, and I was thinking about how true it is that a pet completely changes your world. Remembering his story made me feel nostalgic, but it also brought a smile to my face because, boy, he was quite a character.

## The mountain adventure # There was this day at my sister's cabin in the mountains that gave us the scare of our lives. When we realized it, chaos broke loose. We went out to look for him, some on foot and others by car. I stayed at the house waiting in case he came back. Night fell with a thick fog, and the fear that he wouldn't find his way back had our hearts in our throats. The silence in the cabin was deafening.

Peace returned to our lives with a phone call: a neighbor had found him quite far away. The little guy had gone to visit some other dogs, and the owners of that house had been taking care of him. When he came back, he was an absolute mess from the dirt, but he was as happy as could be. That night he slept like a king in his little bed, completely oblivious to the scare he had given us.

## The end of the road # Time is unforgiving, and last year his body took its toll. At 16 years old, he was already a bit blind, deaf, and slow-paced. His end came suddenly after a fall down the stairs. When we took him to the vet, we discovered he had a hip fracture and his kidneys had collapsed due to chronic renal failure. We had to leave him hospitalized, and two nights later, he just stopped breathing—I think he was tired. He passed away in peace, quietly and making no fuss, exactly the same way he lived.

## His footprint # Max didn't have owners; he had a mother and siblings who adopted him as one of our own. Today, his little bed is gone, and I no longer see him shake when he got excited, nor do I feel his little paw demanding attention or his jealousy when he smelled another dog. But 16 years remain of a loyal companion who taught us what unconditional love is. He left with a tired heart, but we are left with our souls full of gratitude for having had him.
