A Gazillion Goblins At Your Fingertips 🐸 GOBLINFINITE.APP Launch

The Preamble πŸ’

Hello hello! Hope you're enjoying your week so far!

My week started off with the release of a fun little app I've been working on for the past few months.

For those of you who've read my Ludum Dare Dev Logs, you'll be familiar with the wicked talented artist I worked with, ROLLINKUNZ.

The way we met was actually through a mutual friend. This friend was working on an app with Rollinkunz, but had gotten busy with IRL stuff. I was brought in to take over the development side of things, and I loved the idea of the app so of course, being the code monkey I am, I said yes.

Rather early on, we decided to start from scratch and make the app using the Godot Game Engine. I hadn't had much experience with it (remember, this was before I entered the Ludum Dare game jam), so it was a bit of a slow start.

However, as the months went on, and I got more & more experience with it, I very quickly saw the payoff of using the engine for an app of this nature.

...Ok, I've referred to this mysterious app far too many times now without a proper introduction, so without further ado, I'd like to invite you all to join...

THE GOBLINFINITE HORDE 🐸🐸🐸

What Does It Do?

Have you ever wanted a goblin? Yeah, that's a pretty normal request I think.

Well, you're in luck. GOBLINFINITE.APP let's you generate a whole shit ton of unique goblins that you can download & use for RPG campaigns, video games, fantasy stories, social media shenanigans, and anything else you can think of!

And when I say "shit ton", I mean it. I'm just a dumb ol' chimp, so I don't know my math too well & large numbers scare me, but there's well over a trillion unique combinations this app can generate for you.

so many goblins, so little time βŒ›

There's so many possibilities, you'd probably have to outlast the heat death of the universe before you'd see them all! (give or take a few days)

How Does It Work?

How do you think stupid? What, you've never used a goblin generator before?

Oh, you actually haven't? Alright, that's fair. Lucky for you it's pretty simple.

Ever use Tinder before? Well it's just like that, except without the awkward ice-breakers and unsolicited dick pics.

SWIPE TILL YOU FIND YOUR PERFECT MATCH GOBLIN FRIEND

swiper go swiping 🦊

<- Swipe Left -- or click the SACRIFICE button to generate a new goblin. Keep sacrificing the ones that don't spark joy ✨

Sacrificing a goblin sends them to a farm up north where they romp & rassle with other goblins in an open pasture where all their needs are met

-- Swipe Right -> or click the IMMORTALIZE button on any goblins that make you feel that warm tingling feeling deep inside you. The goblin will take a quick photoshoot and you'll get to download a set of 4 unique images. Great for RPGs, Player Characters, Social Media Avatars, and more! One of the generated images even comes with a "Lore" section. More on that below.

Immortalizing a goblin secures their fate in the realm of ZOOG, and they'll be talked about in goblin-based children's books for ages

Not Just Goblin Bodies, But Goblin Lives

You don't just get a whole bunch of unique looking goblins, each newly generated goblin also comes with randomly generated stats & lore.

image.pngStats: Each goblin will get randomly assigned 3 different stat "types". The actual wording of these stats is also randomly generated in an effort to make the goblins more modular & be able to fit into whatever system you're looking to include them in. The individual stats are then assigned a value from -3 to 3. These values show up as the arrow symbols next to the stat names. Everything is color coded to help you quickly see if your generated goblin has low stats or high stats.
image.pngLore: Upon immortalizing your goblins, you'll see a long image that includes the goblin's art, stats, and 3 little lore stories. These help breath life into each goblin, and establish a backstory. They're simple, silly, and short little sentences intended to help you come up with your own idea about what this goblin's childhood must've been like, and how their personality might be.

What Can I Do With The Images?

That sounds like a you problem. No, really. You can do anything you're little goblin brain can think of!

  • Do you create & run your own RPG campaigns, like for Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder?
    • You can use stat sheets to quickly generate a bunch of enemy goblins for you party to encounter!
  • Do you make video games?
    • You can use the goblins art as enemies, or players, in your game worlds!
  • Do you make choose-your-own-adventure games, or any type of interactive fiction?
    • These goblins just LOVE showing up and causing mischief in your work!
  • Do you literally create anything?
    • There's bound to be a use! Inspiration, placeholder art, story prompts, anything you can think!

jerks the gurgle... that's a normal goblin thing, get your mind out of the gutter

Enough talking about it...

TRY IT NOW!

This has been a fun project to work on. A big thanks to ROLLINKUNZ for letting me hop into this. He's the mastermind behind all the sweet artwork, and all the extensive random tables that really bring these goblins to life. Follow him if you want your life to matter: https://twitter.com/ROLLINKUNZ

This isn't it for GOBLINFINITE, by the way. The launch has been super fun so far, and we are both motivated to keep expanding it & add more features in the future. If you have anything specific you'd like to see added, let me know! We are open to suggestions & would love to hear about your use case, no matter how niche.

Thank you for reading! I may write up some more in-depth technical dev logs covering the specific mechanics such as the goblin generation, lore builder, and the general Godot workflow.

Until then, stay safe, keep healthy, and get cozy. See you next time!
