Strategy Corner #34- Rise of the Commons Ruleset

image.png

Heya Splinterlanders :)

We have recently talked a lot about new updates which finally can give us some more options for the development of the game, so I will not return to that. Recently I published an article about a specific tournament, you can read it here , where I as always addresses some new features and updates that I would be happy to see in Splinteralands. There was a similar discussion on @synist3r (Tales from the Crypt Mancer) last youtube video, where he is trying to analyze any limited option available in web3 games. I think the video is worth seeing, but of course, Splinterlands has some different principles, so copying that idea almost 1 to 1 will not be so easy.
Back to today's strategy article, we got quite a simple ruleset Rise of the Commons, let's check and discuss the definition.

Description:

Description:

Only common and rare units may be used in battles.

Summoners are unaffected by this rule.

Firstly, the description of the ruleset in the game is not perfect, sometimes you get just general information which does not give you all the information you need. The best way to read the full description as above from the game documentation at least once. You can check all here.

I seriously encourage you guys to check this site, even more advanced players could find something interesting there.

There is not much to say about that ruleset, your collection is just limited to rare and common. So overall similar to Lost Legendaries, you need to use just lower powerful cards, which sometimes is a good change. You can back to that article here.

Today's battle is Modern Silver tournament battle, with almost similar setup from both sides, of course there are some differences, other way the outcome will be just tied :). So let's check the line-up:

image.png

I think Life Splinter is one of my favorites to use with just commons and rares cards. The opponent thought the same way, unfortunately, his summoner is just level 2. I usually get the same dilemma, my Lorne Shine is just second level, so usually for silver-level battles I try to use a different one, even less powerful. (here it's still a silent summoner ruleset)
Here we got a nice sneak monsters setup with very powerful choices and the same tank, mine got heal ability, because of the higher level. The battle may be not perfectly fair, but I really wanted to present it, because of the monsters we both used.

image.png

Round 2, the opponent's unit monster wasn't the best here, he lost two of them already, a high-damage dealer, and an important support unit with a protect ability. Definitely, our last monster as a sneak target was much better, and we haven't lost any unit in that round.

image.png

Round 3, still no casualties on our side, the opponent has quite limited offense power now, and we should end that battle soon.

image.png

Final blow - still round 3 - As I mentioned it wasn't the fairest battle I ever had, we got the final blow without losing any units. Let's jump to analysis, which could be more interesting here.

The level of the cards was not equal here, but as the battle from the previous Strategy Corner article showed, sometimes it's not so hard to win versus the opponent with higher-level cards. It wasnt the case here, but I chose that fight to show a similar way of thinking. Me and the opponents chose quite similar cards, some of which we discuss below, but unfortunately opponent made quite serious mistake with the order. you should avoid putting fragile important support units in the last position, same with high damage dealers with so low health points. Those was perfect targets for our sneak team. Let's check the cards:

DUMACKE EXILE, is, in my opinion, one of the best commons cards from Riftwatchers set. It has very high speed, nice damage, and sneak ability. Additionally still quite resilient which makes it the perfect choice for the last anti-sneak position monster. In our battle opponent totally missed that, which was a fatal error for him/her. The life team had already a very nice sneak monster and Exile is the perfect addition here.

IMPERIAL KNIGHT is strong, but maybe I used it too much :). Void Armor ability is very useful, of course, it could be easily countered with any shatter (especially Immortalis the King), but still, an additional heal ability makes Imperial Knight a nice first-position tank. I recently use Grandmaster Rathe quite seldom, I usually rely on those kinds of monsters or Iziar, but today we discuss commons and rares, and Knight for sure is one of the strongest cards among them.

TIME MAGE, maybe if there were any good statistic page, I would say time mage is one of the most played cards by me :). It fits perfectly in speed meta right now, with very nice damage, and high speed. I use it almost in every lower mana match in the Life Splinter team, but sometimes I can find a place for it in higher mana matches as well. In higher leagues, it gets a very useful Rust ability which makes it an even more powerful support unit. Definitely one of the best rare available now.

Today's ruleset is not maybe the most exciting, but the same as with Lost Legendaries I really like to use lower power cards to get more depth battles. You usually have to rethink your regular strategy, make some different choices, and rely on cards that haven't got all available abilities :).

When we look at the game from a wider perspective, I really hope that players will be more engaged in the future direction of the game. We soon should have an update which was waited so long, I will not judge here whether it was a good decision or not, a lot of players (whales as well) lost their patience during that bumpy road. I hope there will be still some of them who will be happy to finally see the expected land update.

But I believe now there is a time to see some really needed changes in the game for real players (not investors, not bored whales :) ). As Tales mentioned in that video, I linked: for 2 years we haven't received any new modes or any new bigger game features. Now it's time :) (mhowii :D)

We continue our game from the previous week, today new battle, new card to win :).

I come up with some ideas, I hope you will like them and participate. Every week I will publish one battle, and your goal is to point out the first victim of the battle and who will be the winner. This game is exactly the same as my prediction game which I run on my Wednesday Splinterlands.tv stream. I know that not everyone can attend the stream, so I hope you will still have fun in that way. More about the rules can be read here.

Among all participants who get the correct answer, I will randomly (probably on my Wednesday stream) choose one winner.

The prize of the blog prediction game for the lucky winner will be the epic card:

Here we got the battle:

Game instruction:
Try to point out which monster will die first on the battlefield and who wins the battle

  • t - top player
  • b - bottom player
  • number - order counting from the first position

Examples:
t2b = monster on the second position of top player dies first, the bottom player wins
b6t = monster on the sixth position of bottom player dies first, the top player wins
t3t = monster on the third position of top player dies first, the top player wins
