After a 7-year journey, NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is finally returning to Earth with a sample of asteroid material it collected from the asteroid Bennu. In this video, we discuss how the spacecraft successfully performed a "touch-and-go" maneuver in 2020 to pick up the sample and has been on its way back home since 2021. We explain how the sample capsule will detach from the spacecraft on September 24th and parachute down to the Utah desert, where it will be swiftly recovered to avoid contamination. This sample could provide key insights into the origins of our solar system over 4.5 billion years ago. The spacecraft itself will live on and visit another asteroid called Apophis next. Stay tuned for more details on the sample return and what secrets it might reveal about the ancient solar system!
