Japanese Pasta at its creamiest!

Speaking of fusion food, there are so many possibilities to explore. To me honestly, I am neither a big fan of it nor despise it. Just that sometime fusion food only go one way for me. Either super POP! or completely FLOP!. So, trying fusion food is a high risk of satisfaction. Nevertheless, what other choices do I aka #nomnomfoodie have, expect to try them out for the sake of us #foodie out there.

So, the place we are going to be visiting is called "Matsu", which is a spin-off franchise of TSURU. Now, if you have read my One of my Best Homemade Udon Places in Bangkok blog, you would know what I'm speaking of. If not, please feel free to read them :)

I saw a post in my social media, writing about how good this place and the food looks. I was so eager to try it and that day, luckily I got some friends to come with me. That day, I got there first and get to take pictures of the place.

One thing about Japanese food places is they always put their mock-up menu on display by the entrance. Some people think it's weird, but I really like seeing how real it looks.

Getting our table, I was looking at the menu. Matsu provided both book menu and the QR-code menu. If you're afraid of touching menu after people touching it, you can just scan it from this QR.


I like the book where they have their concepts written, explaining how β€œζΎ Matsu” is Japanese style pasta that is truly 100% homemade pasta.

Pasta is such an all-time favorite for all-ages. In Japan, there is a Japanese pasta called "Wafu Pasta", which uses Japanese ingredients.


As I mentioned earlier in the beginning of the post, Matsu Pasta is a spin-off franchise from Tsuru Udon, which has different menus. The thing which I adore about both Tsuru and Matsu the most, is they keep their best quality and the concept of having daily fresh handmade noodles. Tsuru has homemade Udon and Matsu has homemade pasta! yum πŸ˜‹ Matsu pasta has both kinds of round and flat shaped noodle. Oh plus no preservatives. Yummy and safe!


On the table, a spoon, a fork and chopsticks were set on bright red napkins.

Now enough of non-food information, I'll finally get into the food that I tasted. First are the starters. This is Tomato Salad with feta cheese. costs around 6 USD or 180 THB.

Small dish packed with freshness. I'm not a usual feta cheese lover but this one is alright. I love the combination of onions, cucumber and cherry tomatoes here.

The other start is "Quesadilla Spinach Cheese". With the price of 190 THB (or 6.5 USD), I would say it's a little pricey for the dish. It was nicely done and for a shared dish is a nice starter.

Now I'll give you a sneak peak of a main dish. The first perfect one to show you guys is...

Wafu Carbonara

If you know me, you already know how creamy I am and how much I love creamy food. This dish is the combination I need in my life. Carbonara cream, great al dente pasta, fatty chopped bacon and Onsen egg (super soft boiled egg). This dish costs 360 THB, which is around 12.5 USD. It sounds like a lot but they did gave us such big portions of food.

How do I feel about it?

I really like the taste. The Carbonara sauce is pretty thick and in every bite I got so much cream. I guess you could say that it's a truly Carbonara pasta with the tip of Japanese kick into it.

What makes me feel a little weird about it, is that they gave us so much butter. You might not see it here because it's already melted, but it just very buttery and that make it hard to finish the whole dish. Especially when the dish is as big as this. It just hard to keep up with the cream and the butter.

The next one is...

Hotate Tomato Cream Sauce

First of all, Hotate is scallop, which is one of Japan's most common ingredients. Tomato cream sauce, I guess you could say it's a combination between western and Japanese style. The Hotate Tomato Cream Sauce is actually even more expensive than Wafu Carbonara. I think it's mainly because of Hotate. The other ingredients are simple.

How do I feel about it?

The cream sauce was really nice and smooth and goes well with the other ingredients. Personally, I think although it's a little expensive, comparing the size and how well they serve. It's understandable.

The third one is not pasta, but it's still something we find it goes along with the pasta. That is ....

Meat Doria

The name might be something I've never heard of, but actually it's a rice menu that's topped with cream, tomato sauce, cheese, bacon, and egg. This menu is great if you're not into noodle/pasta and your friend dragged you here. This dish is a little cheaper than other main dishes which is below 300 THB, or less 10 USD.

How do I feel about it

I've always liked a baked rice menu. I'm glad my friend decided to order a non-noodle dish. For this one, tomato is different from the cream sauce one, which is a nice taste to shift the overall taste from something creamy to something that's not so dairy.

I like that they let us do this small thing like putting egg on the menu. Although it's small and doesn't really mean anything. It still made us felt of a little more ownership in the meal.

The fourth and last dish is something I'm super excited for.. It is....

Uni Cream

For so long or since I saw they had this dish, I have been looking forward to tasting it. So, even though it's the most expensive dish for today (460 THB or 15.5 USD), I was willing to pay to try it. I love Uni so much as I mentioned in My Beloved Sushi Place in Bangkok. This is the first time I'd try Uni in a pasta dish. I was super curious how it's gonna turned out since I've only eaten it on a sushi.

Uni sometimes referred to as the sea urchin's roe, or eggs, HOWEVER uni is actually the creature's gonads (reproductive glands), and the edible portion of the spiny sea urchin.

How do I feel about it

One thing that it obviously and surely is, is CREAMY! I know I said this words too many times in this post already, but it is realistically so. It tastes good and interesting. As I wondered how it would be, I learned that it still has the taste of uni that is a little fishy and a little bit of bitterness for the aftertaste. I'm not sure though, if I LOVE it or not. I guess I also considered the fact that it's over 400 THB and for a dish that has nothing else than Uni. It might just be not my go-to dish and from what I read, me personally think it's a little overrated. Overall though I still like the fusion creativity of it and if you love Uni, I recommend you try it.
