* * * * * * En Venezuela ya casi se podría hacer un refrán nuevo y fatalista: _“Si llueve… se apaga la luz”_. La temporada de lluvias arrancó con ganas en la región y, como siempre, nuestro Sistema Eléctrico Nacional decidió que también merece sus ratos de descanso obligatorio. 🌧️💡 Pero esta vez, en medio de los apagones, hay un dato distinto: se están moviendo cosas con empresas extranjeras para tratar de levantar un poquito este desastre eléctrico. Y sí, suena raro mezclar “Venezuela”, “electricidad” y “esperanza” en la misma frase… pero aquí estamos, intentando hacerlo sin que nos dé un cortocircuito mental. 😅

De los apagones al “modo ingeniero optimista” --------------------------------------------- Durante años, el guion ha sido el mismo: llueve fuerte, truena, par de bajones, ¡pum!, apagón. Uno mirando al techo, revisando mentalmente qué se dañará primero: la nevera, el router o la paciencia. Ya no sorprende: transformadores viejos, líneas sin mantenimiento, sobrecargas por todos lados… una receta perfecta para que la luz se vaya cada dos por tres. Lo que sí sorprende ahora es escuchar que se han firmado acuerdos con compañías extranjeras serias para meterle mano al sistema eléctrico. No es el típico discurso politiquero de “ya casi lo arreglamos, confíen” como siempre, sino algo más aterrizado: proyectos, tiempos, etapas, inversiones, técnicos que saben lo que están haciendo y no solo cómo salir en la foto. O al menos eso prometen. 🤭 De la promesa vacía al “ok, esto suena creíble” ----------------------------------------------- La parte más curiosa del cuento: por primera vez en mucho tiempo, las autoridades no están prometiendo milagros de “en tres días todo estará perfecto”. Nada de eslóganes políticos de “apagones nunca más”, tipo propaganda de detergente. Más bien están hablando de plazos medio largos, casi dolorosamente sinceros: unos 18 meses para empezar a notar pequeñas mejoras, de 4 a 5 años para sentir un cambio más sólido. Y sí, a primera vista suena deprimente. Pero si lo piensas dos veces, es más honesto que vendernos el cuento de que un sistema destrozado se arregla con una rueda de prensa y una cadena de televisión. Es como si alguien por fin hubiera dicho: “Mira, esto está feo; nos toca sincerarnos. Va a costar tiempo. Pero ya empezamos a meterle mano”. Y uno, que está acostumbrado a los polítiqueros vendehumo, siente una mezcla rara de desconfianza y alivio. Como cuando el médico no te promete curarte en un día con una pastillita milagrosa muy sospechosa, pero sí te explica bien el tratamiento y el tiempo que va a tomarte. 🩺⚙️ “Todo tiempo pasado fue mejor”… ¿Seguro? ---------------------------------------- Aquí entra un tema que pica y se extiende: ese famoso refrán de “todo tiempo pasado fue mejor”. En Venezuela, con tanta nostalgia acumulada, es tentador creerlo. Uno recuerda cuando los apagones eran excepción y no rutina, cuando no vivíamos con el miedo constante de que se nos quemara el equipo con cada bajón. Pero también está la otra cara: el pasado no se arregla ni se recupera, y muchas de las cosas que hoy sufrimos vienen precisamente de años de abandono, corrupción y decisiones malas acumuladas. Si algo puede ser mejor, no está atrás, está adelante. Y sí, suena cursi, pero es cierto: el único tiempo que podemos mejorar es el que viene, no el que ya se nos fue. La pequeña apuesta, entonces, es esta: ojalá la realidad nos regale la alegría de desmentir el refrán, y que dentro de unos años podamos decir: “¿Te acuerdas cuando se iba la luz cada vez que llovía? Menos mal que eso quedó atrás”. Y que no sea solo nostalgia… sino una comparación real con un presente mejor. ✨

Humor, resignación y un poquito de fe ------------------------------------- Mientras tanto, seguimos en la versión beta de esa posible mejora. Por ahora, toca: * Hacer chistes sobre los apagones para no llorar. * Cocinar rápido “por si se va la luz otra vez”. * Cargar el teléfono al 100% como si fuera un acto religioso. * Trabajar como si cada minuto con electricidad fuera oro en polvo. En el fondo, lo que uno quiere no es un país perfecto, sino uno que funcione, donde la luz no sea un lujo, donde abrir el grifo y prender el interruptor no sea una apuesta. Y si hace falta que venga gente de afuera con conocimientos, equipos y experiencia para encaminar esto, pues bienvenidos sean. Que vengan todos los que hagan falta, siempre que el resultado sea menos apagones y más vida normal. Claro que nos toca casi que rezar que no vengan a ser como lo que pasó con el caso de Odebrecht, que pasó a la historia internacional como uno de los más claros exponentes de la corrupción en Latinoamérica. Si algo sostiene a mucha gente aquí es esa mezcla de terquedad y fe; es lo que hace que ocasionalmente se tengan pensamientos como: “Sí, todo está hecho un desastre, pero algo bueno tiene que pasar a mejorar en algún momento”. Y quizás, solo quizás, estos recientes acuerdos y trabajos técnicos sean el inicio tímido de que no todo tiempo pasado fue mejor… que hay futuros posibles donde se viva un poquito más digno, aunque a ratos cueste imaginarlo. Cierro antes de que se vaya la luz (otra vez) 😅 ------------------------------------------------ Por ahora, aprovecho que hay electricidad para dejar estas líneas y mandar un deseo sencillo pero poderoso: que donde estés, tengas luz eléctrica estable, ánimo firme y suficiente esperanza para seguir insistiendo en una vida mejor, incluso si el entorno parece empeñado en llevarte la contraria. Ojalá dentro de unos años releamos cosas como esta y pensemos: “Wow, ¿te acuerdas cuando un aguacero era sinónimo de apagón? Menos mal que eso quedó en el pasado”. * * * * * * It rained, the power went out… but look who came back with hope. 😌⚡ -------------------------------------------------------------------- In Venezuela, we could almost make up a new, fatalistic saying: _“If it rains… the power goes out.”_ The rainy season kicked off with a bang in the region, and, as always, our National Electric System decided it also deserves its mandatory downtime. 🌧️💡 But this time, amidst the blackouts, there's a different story: things are moving forward with foreign companies to try and alleviate this electrical disaster a little. And yes, it sounds strange to mix “Venezuela,” “electricity,” and “hope” in the same sentence… but here we are, trying to do it without having a mental meltdown. 😅

From Blackouts to “Optimistic Engineer Mode” -------------------------------------------- For years, the script has been the same: heavy rain, thunder, a couple of power dips, boom! Blackout. You stare at the ceiling, mentally checking what will break first: the refrigerator, the router, or your patience. It's no longer surprising: old transformers, unmaintained lines, overloads everywhere… a perfect recipe for frequent power outages. What is surprising now is hearing that agreements have been signed with reputable foreign companies to work on the electrical system. It's not the typical political rhetoric of “we've almost fixed it, trust us” as always, but something more grounded: projects, timelines, stages, investments, and technicians who know what they're doing and not just how to get their picture taken. Or at least that's what they promise. 🤭 From Empty Promises to “Okay, this sounds credible” --------------------------------------------------- The most curious part of the story: for the first time in a long time, the authorities aren't promising miracles like “everything will be perfect in three days.” No political slogans like “no more blackouts,” like detergent commercials. Instead, they're talking about medium-to-long timeframes, almost painfully honest: about 18 months to start noticing small improvements, 4 to 5 years to feel a more solid change. And yes, at first glance it sounds depressing. But if you think about it, it's more honest than selling us the story that a broken system can be fixed with a press conference and a TV appearance. It's as if someone has finally said, "Look, things are bad; we have to be honest. It's going to take time. But we're already starting to tackle it.” And one, who is used to snake-oil politicians, feels a strange mix of distrust and relief. Like when the doctor doesn't promise to cure you in a day with a suspiciously miraculous little pill but does explain the treatment and how long it will take. 🩺⚙️ “The past was always better”… Really? ------------------------------------- This brings up a topic that stings and spreads: that famous saying, “The past was always better.” In Venezuela, with so much accumulated nostalgia, it's tempting to believe it. We remember when blackouts were the exception, not the norm, when we didn't live in constant fear of our equipment being fried with every power surge. But there's also the other side: the past can't be fixed or recovered, and many of the things we suffer today stem precisely from years of neglect, corruption, and accumulated bad decisions. If something can be better, it's not in the past; it's ahead. And yes, it sounds corny, but it's true: the only time we can improve is the future, not the past. The small bet, then, is this: let's hope reality grants us the joy of disproving the saying, and that in a few years we can say, "Remember when the power went out every time it rained? Thank goodness that's a thing of the past." And let's hope it's not just nostalgia... but a real comparison with a better present. ✨

Humor, resignation, and a little bit of faith --------------------------------------------- Meanwhile, we're still in the beta version of that possible improvement. For now, it's time to: * Make jokes about the blackouts so we don't cry. * Cook quickly "just in case the power goes out again." * Charge our phones to 100% as if it were a religious act. * Work as if every minute with electricity were pure gold. Deep down, what we want isn't a perfect country but one that works, where electricity isn't a luxury and where turning on the tap and flipping a switch isn't a gamble. And if it takes outsiders with knowledge, equipment, and experience to get this on track, then they're welcome. Bring in as many as needed, as long as the result is fewer blackouts and more normal life. Of course, practically we have to pray they don't turn out like what happened with Odebrecht, which went down in international history as one of the most blatant examples of corruption in Latin America. If there's one thing that sustains many people here, it's that mix of stubbornness and faith; it's what makes them occasionally have thoughts like, "Yes, everything's a mess, but something good has to happen to improve things eventually." And perhaps, just perhaps, these recent agreements and technical work are the timid beginning of the realization that not all past times were better... that there are possible futures where we can live a little more dignified, even if it's hard to imagine at times. I'm closing before the power goes out (again) 😅 ------------------------------------------------ For now, I'm taking advantage of the fact that there's electricity to leave these lines and send a simple but powerful wish: that wherever you are, you have a stable electricity supply, a strong spirit, and enough hope to keep striving for a better life, even if your surroundings seem determined to thwart you. Hopefully, in a few years, we'll reread things like this and think, "Wow, do you remember when a downpour meant a blackout?
