Great Sand Dunes National Park, CO was the highlight of Day 2 of our US Road Trip 2026. We started the day in Buena Vista, CO and drove south along Rocky Mountains ranges. We detoured a bit to Zapata Falls, where I hiked at my highest elevation up to that point, and finally admired the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. The day ended in Taos, NM. [POL] Park Narodowy Great Sand Dunes ('Wielkie Wydmy Piaskowe'), w Colorado był najważniejszym punktem programu drugiego dnia naszej podróży 'US Road Trip 2026'. Dzień rozpoczęliśmy w Buena Vista (Colorado) i jechaliśmy na południe, wzdłuż pasm Gór Skalistych. Zjechaliśmy trochę z trasy do Zapata Falls, gdzie wędrowałem szlakiem położonym najwyżej w moim życiu (do tej pory) . Na koniec podziwialiśmy most nad rzeką Rio Grande. Na nocleg zjechaliśmy do Taos (New Mexico).

Each day of my April 2026 road trip had been designed to move down the planned route (a 15-days loop from Denver) and stop for hikes. [POL] Każdy dzień podróży był zaplanowany, aby przesuwać się po zaplanowanej pętli (15 dni ze startem i metą w Denver) i zatrzymywać się na trekkingi.

Accommodations

Start: Slackwater Inn, Buena Vista, Colorado End: El Pueblo Lodge, Taos, New Mexico. Personal note: while all our accommodation were similar 2-star motels, El Pueblo Lodge stood out. Nice architecture, spacious rooms were partial reasons, but the main was... most American motels serve glucose spike for breakfast, but this one offered real nutritional food. [POL] Uwaga osobista. Większość naszych noclegów to motele 2-gwiazdkowe o podobnym standardzie. El Pueblo Lodge wyróżniał się. Częściowo architekturą i obszernymi pokojami, ale główna różnica to śniadanie. Większość amerykańskich moteli serwuje skok glukozy, a tutaj mieliśmy prawdziwe pożywne jedzenie.

Buena Vista in Buena Vista

Staying for the night in a place called Buena Vista, one might have high expectations for the views. The town did not disappoint. The vista below is what I saw first thing in the morning - I simply went out from our motel Slackwater Inn, Buena Vista, Colorado. [POL] Jeśli śpimy w miejscu, które nazywa się Buena Vista ('dobry widok' w j. hiszpańskim), możemy mieć wysokie oczekiwania odnośnie panoramy. Miasteczko nie zawiodło. Oto co zobaczyłem z samego rana - wystarczyło wyjść z naszego motelu Slackwater Inn, Buena Vista, Colorado.

The majestic Collegiate Peaks are part of Sawatch Range in Rocky Mountains. It's a group of peaks reaching over 4,000m a.s.l., named after American top universities - Harvard, Princeton, Yale etc. On day two we started taking short videos of the scenery while driving (phone held by a passenger, needless to say!). Our playlist fit well - American country music. Most often than not, Johnny Cash sang in the background of our videos. Our first roll on the morning of Day 2 was shot shortly after leaving Buena Vista. [POL] Majestatyczne Collegiate Peaks to część pasma Sawatch Range Gór Skalistych. Nazwa 'Szczyty Akademickie' bierze się od najwyższych gór pasma, wznoszących się na ponad 4tys m n.p.m. a nazwanych od wiodących amerykańskich uczelni - Harvard, Princeton, Yale itd. Drugiego dnia podróży dał początek krótkim filmikom nagrywanym z drogi (komórka była oczywiście w ręku pasażera!). Mieliśmy dobrze dobraną playlistę - amerykańska muzyka country. Królował Johnny Cash. Pierwsze video drugiego dnia to Góry Skaliste tuż po wyjeździe z Buena Vista.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Location and Geology

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado is located on the eastern side of vast San Luis valley, at the western foothills of Sangre de Cristo mountains range (part of southern Rockies). San Luis valley is interesting on its own. Almost 200km long and 120km wide, it is the world's largest alpine valley. Note the Spanish names - this is how many geographical features in this part of the USA were originally named. While the valley's name doesn't need translation, the mountain range is called 'Blood of Christ'. [POL] Park Narodowy Great Sand Dunes (Colorado) zlokalizowany jest po wschodniej stronie rozległej doliny San Luis. Dolina jest ciekawa sama w sobie - ma prawie 200km długości i 120km w najszerszym miejscu, co czyni ją największą doliną typu alpejskiego na świecie. Wielkie Wydmy znajdują się u stóp zachodnich zboczy gór Sangre de Cristo (część południowych Gór Skalistych). Warto zwrócić uwagę na hiszpańskie nazewnictwo - wiele toponimów w tej części USA pochodzi od hiszpańskich 'odkrywców'.

Great Sand Dunes National Park protects the largest sand dunes in North America. The highest dune is 230m tall, measured from the San Luis valley bottom. The dunes were created by erosion of San Juan mountains, which form the western boundary of San Luis valley. Prevailing winds have blown eroded material west, where the high Sangre de Cristo range formed a natural barrier and the sediments accumulated at their foothills. [POL] Park Narodowy Great Sand Dunes chroni największe piaszczyste wydmy w Północnej Ameryce. Najwyższa wydma wznosi się na 230m ponad dno doliny San Luis. Wydmy powstały w wyniku erozji gór San Juan, tworzących zachodnią granicę doliny San Luis. Przeważające tu wiatry zachodnie przenoszą zerodowany materiał w stronę gór Sangre de Cristo, odbijając się od nich i formując wydmy.

Giant Sandbox

My plan had been to scale the highest dune and then hike to a nearby hill to have a look from above. Well, when we arrived and saw the big piles of sand, we behaved like little children. We ended up doing neither of my planned routes and walked a winding path that I cannot recreate, but still we enjoyed the park very much. [POL] Mój plan zakładał wejście na najwyższą wydmę i wyjście na pobliskie wzgórze aby popatrzeć na wydmy z góry. Ale gdy przyjechaliśmy na miejsce, plan od razu się rozsypał. Góry piasku zrobiły z nas dzieci. Nie przeszliśmy żadnego planowanego szlaku, a trasę którą pokonaliśmy trudno odtworzyć na mapie. Niemniej jednak nasze bezładne wędrowanie dało nam dużą frajdę. Zapata Falls

Leaving Great Sand Dunes National Park, we added a short hike nearby - Zapata Falls. It was only 800m one way and led to a small, but beautiful waterfall, hidden in a narrow gorge. The trail starts at 9000 feet a.s.l. and ends at 9400ft, which translates to 2743m and 2865m a.s.l. respectively. These elevations made it the highest location I had ever hiked in my life up to that point. [POL] Po wyjeździe z parku narodowego dodaliśmy krótką wędrówkę do naszego planu dnia. Celem był wodospad Zapata Falls. Krótki szlak, zaledwie 800m w jedną stronę, prowadził do niewielkiego wodospadu ukrytego w wąskim wąwozie. Szlak zaczyna się na wysokości 2743m n.p.m. a kończy 120m wyżej. Co oznacza najwyższy trekking w moich dotychczasowych górskich wędrówkach.

The information board calls the trail "short but arduous". Well, it was short indeed, but 'arduous'? 120m of elevation gain is hardly arduous. And the path is quite easy. The only difficulty was to negotiate slippery rocks in the stream bed at the very end. I have to admit that wading the stream might get tricky when water is high. But when we were there, we simply stepped from stone to stone. [POL] Tablica informacyjna nazywa szlak "krótkim ale wyczerpującym". Hm, krótki rzeczywiście jest. Ale 'wyczerpujący'? 120m przewyższenia nie zrobiło na nas wrażenia, tym bardziej, że ścieżka była łatwa. Jedyną trudnością byłoby przejście końcowego odcinka, gdzie trzeba przejść po śliskich kamieniach w strumyku. Byłoby, gdyby stan wody był wyższy. W czasie naszej wizyty nie mieliśmy żadnego problemu z stąpaniem po kamieniach wystających z wody.

The very last section of the trail led us thru a 'eye of a needle'. We found ourselves in a narrow gorge, with not much of daylight getting in from above. We saw a frozen waterfall - which should not be surprising given the altitude and time of visit (mid-April). Even though there was no snow around the creek, the gorge was cold enough to keep ice like a fridge. [POL] Ostatni fragment szlaku prowadził przez 'ucho igielne'. Znaleźliśmy się w wąskim wąwozie, gdzie docierało niewiele światła słonecznego. Zobaczyliśmy zamrożony wodospad. O tej porze roku (połowa kwietnia) i na tej wysokości nie powinno to być niespodzianką. Dookoła nie było już śniegu, ale wąwóz trzymał lód jak lodówka.

Rio Grande Gorge Bridge

The parking lot at Zapata Falls offers a beautiful view of the extensive San Luis valley and the San Juan range which forms the valley's western boundary. Our next destination was Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, conveniently located near Taos, where we would be staying for the night. Since Taos is in New Mexico, we would be leaving Colorado. [POL] Z parkingu pod Zapata Falls podziwialiśmy widok na rozległą dolinę San Luis. Z płaskiego krajobrazu wyrasta wał gór San Juan - łańcucha zamykającego dolinę od zachodu. Naszym kolejnym celem jest most nad rzeką Rio Grande, położony tuż przed Taos, gdzie będziemy nocować. Po drodze przejedziemy z Colorado do New Mexico.

I had planned a short hike along the rim of Rio Grande Gorge, but high winds and coming rain made us abort that idea. We only stopped for a short photo session. [POL] Planowałem krótki trekking wzdłuż wąwozu rzeki Rio Grande, ale porywisty wiatr i nadchodząca ulewa wybiły nam ten pomysł z głowy. Ograniczyliśmy się do wyjścia na punkt widokowy.

The bridge was constructed in 1965, as part of US Interstate 64 road. It is 390m long and its height over Rio Grande is 180m, making it the 7th highest bridge in the US. [POL] Most nad Rio Grande został oddany do użytku w roku 1965, w ciągu drogi federalnej I-64. Ma 390m długości i wznosi się na 180m nad rzeką Rio Grande, co czyni go siódmym najwyższym mostem w USA.

Taos

Taos (New Mexico) is worth exploring. Named after a Spanish explorer don Fernando de Taos, the town is much older than the US. Towering over the town is Taos Pueblo, one of the longest continually inhabited places in all of Americas. Local Native Americans - Tiwa tribe - used to built houses from clay (the fact that they lived in permanent villages as oposed to nomadic nations of the prairies, led to collective name 'Pueblans'; 'pueblo' means town or village'in Spanish). The style is still visible in contemporary Taos architecture. [POL] Taos (New Mexico) to miasteczko warte odwiedzenia. Nazwane od hiszpańskiego osadnika Fernando de Taos, miasto jest starsze od Stanów Zjednoczonych. Ponad współczesnym miastem góruje Taos Pueblo - jedno z najdłużej ciągle zamieszkanych miejsc w obu Amerykach. Rdzenni Amerykanie (plemię Tiwa) budowali domy z gliny. Fakt, że Indianie z południa mieszkali w stałych wioskach a nie przenośnych osiedlach wigwamów jak wędrowne plemiona prerii, sprawił, że zostali nazwanie kolektywnie 'Pueblanie' ('pueblo' w j. hiszpańskim znaczy miasteczko/wioska).
