I'm sure different perspectives will find value from each of the channels, however, if we simply let the system decide I imagine the popular channel would win out - if for no other reason, it already has

I'm with you, I find myself using tags and then switching to new or active, I lean more to active because it's usually more engaging and you get less bot posts i've found

Whenever we monetize something we open it up to greed. The problem, as I see it, is that there is an arbitrary line that usually gets drawn on what constitutes 'good' and 'bad' behavior in these systems.
