There was a knock on his room door, and his heart skipped a beat. No one else was in the house. Who could it be or what could it be? Slowly, he got out of bed and tiptoed to the door and put his ear close to it. For over a minute, he listened carefully, but he heard nothing.
Relieved, he sighed and concluded the sound was from outside.
Just as he turned toward the bed, there was another knock. He froze. Then he turned, facing the door.
"Who's there," he whispered. His heart banged against his chest.
Moments later, a voice said, "It's me. Open."
