Questions: What are the advantages and disadvantages of universal basic income? (source: @mackenziejones)

Response: The biggest pro of UBI is the mobility it creates for those in the lower classes. By providing people a steady income that is not dependent on their job or geographical location, people can move to better places for better opportunities. People are no longer stuck and forced to remain where they are. Another pro is that it would help combat against poverty and it helps give income to unpaid jobs - like parenting. People who have children don't have to pay for expensive daycare and can focus on raising their kids and taking care of their family. It also can lead to a growth in employment rates and a decrease in school drop-outs - for employment rates, people can afford all that it takes to have a job and for school drop-outs, people don't have to choose between school or jobs. Some people say a con would be that it would not incentive working. People would become lazy (like they, allegedly, became with the stimulus checks) and that they would live from UBI paycheck to paycheck. As such, then perhaps the unemployment rate would actually rise, however, I don't think that this would be the case. I think it might raise at first as people took advantage of it to move or start up a small business or something but, in the long run, I think that overall unemployment would drop. The other con people talk about is how much it would cost our government. I say with how much we're spending on the military, we could very easily move some numbers around and make it work, especially as more people employed mean more taxes to fund this. Overall, I think there are more pros than cons and this is a good idea that should be implemented.
