Utopian.io has been helping many open source projects with numbers of contributions in different categories. Contributions made in Utopian.io is synced to Github which means open source projects will be able to receive the contributions directly from contributors when posted via Utopian.io. Utopian.io has brought tremendous value to the projects as well as contributors and will continue to rise upwards. It is one and only open source project rewarding open source contributors and project owners for their appreciative work to help the community.
Complication
In the current context, Contributors are allowed to make the contributions in any categories they choose if they meet the rules that they acknowledge. The problem with this can be there are many projects that only accepts specific contributions like bug hunting or bug hunting and development or what they are looking for. There would not be any point of making the contributions that open source projects are not looking for. This will simply overflow the GitHub with unwanted contributions and take the valuable time of contributors where their contributions are either unused or unseen. Even though all contributions are rewarded, there isn't true value towards that hard worked contribution when it is not even valued by the projects.
Suggestion
We will be able to solve this by enhancing the feature that we already have. We should enable and disable the categories upon the request of the project owners. We can leave everything just the way it is right now as a default feature, but when we get the request from the project owners we should be able to enable the requested categories and disable the rest for that specific project upon their request.
Benefits
- The project owners will be able to reward the contributors on top of the Utopian.io to all the contributions as a bounty or as an appreciation more easily and fairly.
- The project owners will be able to focus on the things that matter the most and leave the rest for future.
- The project owners will have the freedom to accept the contributions they are seeking for.
- The contributors will be able to help the projects on what they are seeking for.
- Time and effort of the contributors will not be wasted.
- This will help Utopian.io to build the relationships and work together with the many other open source projects.
- And more...
Draft of the Solution
When a user clicks on the Contribution tab, a user should be shown Rules Acknowledgement page.
After acknowledging the rules, it should be taken to an Editor page as it does now but Github project (eg. Wordpress/Wordpress) field should be on the top instead of Catagories.
Let's say Steemit is only accepting Bug Hunting and Development contributions and they had requested us to only allow only those contributions then we should make Bug Hunting and Development visible and hide the rest once the Github project is entered.
If we haven't received any request from the Project owners or they are accepting all the contributions than we should leave it default.
Synopsis
This enhancement will help contributors and open source project owners both as well as help Utopian.io to enrich the relationship with Open Source world by working together. This can also help start-up open source projects to receive the contributions on the tasks they are needing the most rather than receiving everything where many of them will not help them to speed up their development process.
Thank You!!
