If you have seen my earlier posts, then you noticed that I have been contributing to open source project quite often now. I am very inspired by the idea behind Utopian.io. There were thousands of contributors of open source projects who were contributing tirelessly without expecting anything. They contributed a lot to the open source projects which I and you are using right now and many others that we use every day. It would have never been possible if they were not contributing to those projects without any expectations. Utopian saw the problem and brought us the platform where those thousands of contributors can be appreciated for the work they did for the community. If you have lots of skills set, then it's easy for you to make the contributions, but if you don't have lots of technical skills, you may also contribute. You might think that ohh, what should I contribute, I don't know coding? Well, the answer is simple, as everyday users, we see many things which aren't working properly or we have an idea that can make the project even better. Yes, You can contribute your ideas or features you want to see and if you find anything that's not working properly, you can report the issue as well. My Contribution Today
Utopian is going to become a game changer soonerer or later in terms of paying the thousands of contributors to Open Source projects. As you and I contribute on Utopian, we see the lists of contributions we made every day on our profile. As time goes, our lists will keep on increasing and our contribution feed will get crowded by lists of hundreds of contributions. Many of us will want to go back and see what we contributed in the past. It will be very helpful to back to the history and easily see what we accomplished and see the numbers of contributions we made in the past. Many of the contributors of Utopian will be the GitHub users as well who will be contributing directly on the Github and by using the Utopian platform. It will be easier for them to track how much contributions they are making through Utopian.
My Proposal:
In order for the users to see the contribution history, we need to implement a function where users should be able to see their contributions as a list like now or as a graph. We can set the contributions to be displayed as a list like right now as a default when users visit the profile. When they click on the contribution button they should be shown "View as a list" and "View as a graph". They should be able to pick either of those and see their contributions.
When the user selects the option "View as a list", it should give the lists of contributions that user has made in a listing format that we currently have. It contains all the contributions that have been made so far. We can implement "graph" to display on the profile to lower the loading time as well, but for now, I think a list view better as default.
We can use similar interface or functionality that GitHub has now. In my view, it will be easy to adopt since we will have integrated the GitHub repositories in the Utopian also. This feature is already being used by GitHub users, so it will be the go-to place for the everyday GitHub users to check their contribution history if needed.
I hope this will bring value to the Utopian.io users in a long run. As we grow, we will need something where we can go back and see what we did a year or two years from now. Utopian is not built in the short term vision as far as I understand. I would like to thank @elear for bringing this platform and serving the community we believe in. I would also like to thank all the moderators for doing very good job on the post review process and responding very quickly to the concerns and questions. And to all the contributors for contributing to the open source projects through Utopian. Big thanks to all the delegators who have made Utopian happen.
