ULog#32: Post Freedom Month Update

Fast forward in time and we are in August. The year is more than half way over and I still feel time is speeding up week by week. I'm not sure if this is my perception or things have been actually speeding up. Sometimes, I want to record myself and see how long it takes me to do certain chores, tasks, and whatnot.

Well, the good old car needed some fixing this month. It's a 2004 Hyundai, so it's had a good run. It's got over 184,000 miles on it already. I'm hoping it would run for another 60,000 miles or so before I get myself a "new" used car.

In Life:

What you see in the picture above is the interior door handle. Years of stress from opening the door had caused the plastic to finally crack and snap. Lucky for me, I was able to perform the repair myself. Even luckier was that it was a cloudy day, so I did not have to do it in the heat.

The new part only costed me $35, which is much cheaper than the labor I would spend had I took it to the mechanic. Labor cost usually far exceeds the price of the parts, but is a necessary evil when you do not know how to do it yourself.

I have never bought a brand new car before because I don't like having a depreciating asset. For the most part, a car is a tool to get from point A to point B. As long as it's safe and reliable, I don't mind an oldie. But, there is an end to everything, so I am prepared to drop the money for another vehicle when the time comes.

In Steem:

It seems SCOTs and Tribes are all the rage. It even boosted the number of active users on the chain! Well, that's because everyone and their grandmothers alter egos needed several accounts. So, the inflated numbers you see are exactly those.

Why? It's for "efficient curation". Since all the tribes share one mana pool per account, it is impossible to gain the most rewards without alts. Also, most of them reward a larger share to curators compared to Steem's 25%, which will change in next fork.

As centralized as Steem Engine is, I guess that's the best we got for now until SMTs are functional. Given STINC's track record, I'm not sure when the full release will happen. We know they scheduled HF21 near the end of this month. Would they do another hard fork in less than a quarter's time?

Now, the real question is how will SMTs coexist with SCOTs? That's another mystery we will have to wait to unfold. On the subject of SCOTs themselves, there is no way I could say much about them in this short update. They deserve their own individual posts.

Needless to say, I got myself into them, especially the @stemgeeks tribe. There are some others, but I will say stuff about them another day.
