ULOG 005 - "Ma Ne Nji Sek" a Cameroonese Song

Saturday will be the start of my night shifts for the World Cup broadcast on Australian television. Tomorrow, Friday, I will be given a rest day to allow adjustment for the new working hours and adapt to the new sleeping cycle. I decided to start adjusting my self my setting the alarm at 5.45 am instead of the usual 6.35 am, but as I expected it, as soon as I had 6 hours of sleep I woke myself up without the alarm and it was 4.55 am! I will be totally 'caput' this evening and will probably fall asleep very early.

Ma Ne Nji Sek

I stayed in bed for another hour before heading to the shower. Meanwhile, I turned the phone on and started to look for something that interested me for a while. I went on Youtube and looked for "American Native Flute" and "Shakuhachi". I've always wanted to get myself an American flute and learn how to play songs like El Condor Pasa. But getting my hand on one is not easy in Australia and I would have to get it shipped all the way from the US but most of the one I have found so far are quite expensive. I've however found someone who makes Shakuhachi, Japanese flutes, and made my mind on a C tuned one (432 Hz). The American Native Flute and Shakuhachi have quite a different sound but both are great. The C 432 Hz Shakuhachi is a low tone one which I like a lot.

Here is a Youtube video of a Shakuhachi version of "My Heart Will Go On":

This version is cleaner:

All those music in my head then suddenly made me think of Uni time back in France when I used to be part of the Gospel University Choir. It was directed by Martin Koums, a Cameroon singer who settled in France. One of my favorite songs we performed in that choir is "Ma ne nji sek". Martin told me once that he did show the video of one of our performances back to Cameroon and people were calling me "The Chinese who sings in African language" 🤣. Here is a performance of the choir back in 2008 (I wasn't a member anymore at that time as I left France for the UK):

Here is Martin Koums' own version performed with his group "Africa Jazz Color":

The following is a recording of the Gospel University Choir from before 2006, I was singing as a soloist in this song “My Lord, what a morning”:

And this one is “Psalm 27” with a friend, Andre and me in the solo:

Good memories to start the day!

8.45 am, I got to my desk and had to help to debug some issues we had due to some technical issue that happened earlier in the morning.

Things took time to resolve as it was an issue that happened on a third party service's network we are using. But we got it sorted out in the end. Its now time for lunch, on the way out I noticed more flags and World Cup decoration around the building:

As we had a meeting at 1pm, we decided to head to the in-house cafe to buy some Peri Peri Chicken and chips and head to the park.

Some of the colleagues were having a friendly football match in the park to get into the mood for the World Cup:

After lunch, my colleagues and I went to play basketball instead:

The afternoon went as usual. Tomorrow (Friday), I will be staying at home all day resting and get ready for a 3 am shift on Saturday!
