#ULOG: When Another First Time Happens- Meeting the Phosphates

Hello guys! Hope you are enjoying your day :)

Today, I got the chance to visit our office's laboratory where they usually conduct water quality analyses. I am under the same division which manages this lab but I never had the chance to see and visit it before.

On our way to the laboratory, the rain fell really hard. Whoa we can't even see the road clearly. It's still summer and yet it rains so hard this past few days (climate change, here we go)

But we still needed to go. Okay we reached the la, and I was soooooo excited, believe me.

Yep, machines, equipment and glass wares everywhere. Coll huh?

I learned how to do some water quality analysis. It was on the measurement of phosphates content in a water sample.

See? We did this, haha! I feel so accomplished!

But why does phosphates measurement in water quality matter anyway?

Phosphorous content in water if present in acceptable level is useful for the organisms living in it BUT too much can lead to eutrophication. Back to Science 101 during our primary school, eutrophication is a bad indicator to a water body and it simply translates into "polluted" water in some cases. Algae grows and multiplies exponentially in nutrient-rich waters and when they dominate the water body, they can consume more oxygen dissolved in the water, causing less of it available for other aquatic life.

Eventually, it can cause fish kills and the like. It can also kill other underwater plants who depend on the penetrating sunlight because too much algae can also block light.

Where do these extra phosphate come from? Well, try looking at your detergents. Sometimes our detergents contain much of these. Too much fertilizers can also cause this one as well.

So please, help the environment by not being "too much." :)

Back to the laboratory thingy, wow, I applaud all those who are working in this kind of environment. Here, you need patience, and lots of patience and be very keen to details. One should also be prim and proper as to the dangers that one may encounter within the bounds of its walls-- because one wrong movement can cause severe damage to properties (like equipment and machines) and to yourself as well (don't spill the chemicals! please!).

Kudos to laboratory workers and experts!
