Abita

Welcome to where yeast dies and goes to heaven. Today I’m going to take you on a beer tour at Abita Brewery located in Covington Louisiana.

Abita was founded by Jim Patton and Rush Cumming in 1986. It is well known for its Purple Haze beer. However the company also produces root beer for any of you non-beer drinkers, which I would highly recommend since it has a unique taste that can be attributed to it being made with sugarcane.

But let’s talk beer

So what sets Abita apart? Well apparently preservatives. Abita beer claims to be devoid of preservatives which allow for beer that is refined and fresh. Another thing that adds to the flavor is the water they use. Since they are located in Abita Springs, it only seems natural that they draw straight from the source. Who can pass up pure water? Most breweries differ by having to resort to filtering and chemical treatment of their water before the brewing process even begins.

The Barley, Hops, and Yeast

No need for supplements, or super healthy foods, you can get your fiber source from Abita. Abita is known for using barley, and barley serves as a source of fiber. This barley then undergoes a malting process that involves moistening and heating to turn barley starch into barley sugar. They search low and high for their barley which they acquire from North America, United Kingdom and Germany bringing consumers only the best varieties of pale, crystal, chocolate and many other specialty malts.

The hops are the best part of the beer as they are used to balance the sweetness of the malted barley. They are also a natural preservative that allows for that flavor and aroma you experience while drinking beer.

So how does the alcohol work it’s way into this process? Well that’s what the yeast is for. Yeast converts sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide through fermentation. Therefore not only do we get that nice buzz, but it also allows for that carbonated taste.

Check It Out

If you’re ever down in the area I suggest you check this place out. Tours run $5 dollars and include tokens that provide FREE samples of the beer. Most of the time they will allow you to keep sampling once your tokens are gone.
