It is located at a distance of 117 km from the capital of the country, Sofia. It derives its name from the founder of the monastery, Saint Ivan Rilski (Рилски). The construction of the monastery began in 1335. During his lifetime, the popularity of Ivan spread far and wide. As a result, his disciples started living with him and eventually created a community.
