This city is a great place to visit, it is dominated by the Gothic castle of the Hessian landgraves; its Rittersaal (Knights’ Hall) and chapel were begun in 1277, and the building was completed in 1493. It is full of buildings that have been fully restored. This restoration has preserved the great heritage of the city.

Marburg is the ideal destination for those who are passionate about medieval architecture. It is famous for its medieval churches, such as Elisabethkirche, or Elizabeth Church, built in (1235–83) . The city’s early history is associated with St. Elizabeth of Hungary, the church was name after her. She arrived from the Wartburg in 1228 and spent the remaining three years of her life there in charitable works.

On your visit to the church you will find many historical items on display, such as original furnishings, shrines and carvings. You can also visit the tombs of ancient princes as well as the tomb of President Hindenburg who died in 1934.
You will be highlighted by the magnificent Gothic style castle that sits high on the hill overlooking the town. Known as the Marburger Schloss, tours are available. However, I suggest you book your tour in advance as both hours and tours are limited.

A walking tour through its old town section is like a step back in time. The narrow streets are lined with shops and pubs that are reminiscent of medieval times. I recommend you enjoy a nice lunch at one of the many outdoor cafes and take in all of the sites and sounds of the town.

The Grimm path entices with fairytale figures in breezy heights on houses, steps and walls and rising up 109 metres high. These characters from well-known fairy tales are supplemented with facts worth knowing about the brothers Grimm in Marburg, the light art project "Sterntaler" by Doris Conrad as well as "The blue light" in the Marburg castle fountain.

There is a free updated town map with the Grimm path stations available at the Marburg Stadt und Land Tourismus GmbH, Biegenstraße 15. There are QR codes at the stations with which hikers of the Grimm path can access information or links about the world-famous brothers and Marburg students with the suitable Smartphone or iPhone.

The River Lahn itself offers you much to do. You can rent a paddle boat and enjoy a nice paddle boat ride down the river.
Also, there are river-side walking and cycling tours that take you on hiking trails along the river’s edge. One of these walking tours will take you through a scale model of our solar system. You actually start walking at the Sun and end up on Pluto! ;-)shal Paul von Hindenburg during World War II.

Marburg also has a great pool complex with both indoor and outdoor pools for relaxation and for exercise. This complex is open to the public, however, there is a minimal entry fee. You can find a variety of family entertainment such as putt-putt golf, bowling as well as a great number of dining options.

Marburg is a regional shopping, conference, and administrative centre and a popular summer tourist destination. The city’s economy is also dependent on the Philipps University of Marburg (founded 1527), Germany’s first Protestant university. German and other dramatic classics are produced annually at a festival in the open-air theatre on the castle grounds.
