One unhappy clown... A Short Story [ENG]

One unhappy clown...

In the city of Barcelona, there once existed a very famous circus. They were famous for being the largest and most famous circus in history. Individuals young and old came to see the show from far and wide. They had jugglers, trapeze artists, vaulting jumpers, unicycles and a large variety of zoo animals. The adults always filled the show and every performance night was a huge spectacle. There was, of course, a clown that always entertained the kids. While the adults filed into the show, he would entertain the kids with his crazy antics in a separate tent.

This young clown had the craziest of antics. He had the unique ability to make the kids laugh without stop. His genius occurrences were special. He even played a violin that sounded off-key, but somehow it made the kids always laugh. The case with the clown was that inside he felt like a failure. He thought it was ridiculous to paint his face and put on a red nose. He joined the circus because he wanted to be an equilibrist and walk the tightrope. Maybe this way he would hear more ovations instead of only laughter.

The young clown did not know how to assume his position. He never noticed how many people he made happy with role as Cinderella. If he would ever leave, the circus would never be the same without his off-key violin. Yet he was still determined to be unhappy. He felt so ridiculous with his unicycle, a white painted face and the itchy red nose button. He still wanted to be an equilibrist and walk the tightrope. Maybe this way he would hear more ovations instead of only laughter.

It was a snowy white, winter morning. All of the circus performers had just finished the Saturday practice. The clown could not resist anymore. He climbed up to the crossbar. Went he was up there, the vertigo came upon him and he was scared. He did not notice they had not put the safety nets the last time. He began to walk with all the valor he could muster. He barely felt anything when he hit the floor. The lion tamer was the first one to find the clown unconscious on the floor. The lion tamer was able to save his life. One month later, the clown woke up. The owner of the circus was next to him and with tears in his eyes, he said: "Everything is finished, the circus is closed, the children no longer came to the shows."

The now old clown lives in little cottage on top of a hill; glued day and night to his wheelchair. It seems that the clown has finally accepted himself. He even plays the violin now and then. Ten children visit him and make him very happy. When he sees them coming from afar, he paints his face, and puts on a large red nose.

When the adults laugh at him with his red nose, he replies: "I would be the miserable one, I would be the guilty one, if I did not complete the mission I have received. Although I was a failure then, I am a clown by profession. Don't judge me wrongly, God has made me this way."

"El Payaso" by Marcos Vidal.
