NMS: THE NEXT ADVENTURER
CHAPTER 29: THE FACTORY
Days past and Taebaker set itself up in the weapons research facility. Noma walked in to find it designing various hand-held weapons via a holographic display.
The alien saw Noma enter and address vir. “These facilities are glorious, but know that we Vy’Keen exterminate worlds that show even the merest hint of weapons production. Consider yourself lucky that I am your friend”. For a while the creature rambled on, speaking of the ‘holy war of Dryo’ dagh’ and peace obtained through victory in battle, its voice rising like a king stirring the troops on the edge of battle. Not for the first time, Noma wondered how vis peaceful intentions would remain compatible with this Vy’Keen’s desire for glory in war.
Taebaeker announced that it had work for Noma to do. Ve felt trepidation. What reckless act of courage might a member of a warrior race send vir on? Thankfully, the mission did not sound too dangerous. The Vy’Keen had identified the location of an autonomous weapons factory and believed sabotaging it would prove the worth of the team. Noma set off.
Noma walked among the lush red grasslands, past tall trees supporting large leaves that cast shadows offering shelter from the Sun.
Up ahead there as a hill, and Noma set off to climb it in order to survey the surroundings. Once at the top, ve looked down over hills and plains. Here and there grew those tall trees, and a lake twinkled in the sunlight.
As ve was plotting a course towards the destination, ve heard a noise coming from behind. Turning around, Noma saw an animal running past. It was a gray, stocky thing, a quadruped that stood about two meters from the ground to shoulder. Its head was a mass of thick bone, and Noma supposed it must engage in head-butting contests to win mates.
Thankfully it showed no interest in Noma, and just ran down the hill. Noma also went down the hill at a more leisurely rate and continued walking until the destination was reached.
There it was, the automated weapons facility. It was a big, gray building, and a heavy lock kept the door tightly shut.
Noma approached the door and set the multi-tool to blaster mode. The heavy lock endured shot after shot, but eventually it succumbed to the assault and Noma was able to enter. The command room was bathed in the red light of emergency lighting and warning sirens were sounding.
Noma worked quickly, overriding production and downloading blueprints. This place would produce no more illegal weapons. But maybe vis own weapons specialist could make useful tech out of those blueprints…
