The #13 Kansas Jayhawks got a much needed home victory against the #20 West Virginia Mountaineers when they won 77-69. The game took place at the Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas. This was a must win for the Jayhawks after they fell behind the Texas Tech Raiders in the Big 12 race.
The first half of this game was full of runs by both squads. But once the half time buzzer was rung, it was tied up at 34. Kansas scored in a much different way than West Virginia did though. The home team Jayhawks spent their day at the free throw line. In fact, they would shoot 35 free throws by the end of regulation. But the Mountaineers would only take 2 shots from the free throw line. This was the biggest difference in free throw attempts in the entire 2018 season.
The leading scorer for the Kansas Jayhawks was big man Udoka Azubuike who had 21 points. He shot 7-8 from the field and 7-10 from the free throw line. Devonte Graham scored 15 points including 2-5 from the 3 point line. But the scariest part of the Jayhawks season continues to be their bench. Kansas only used a rotation of 7 players and got just 8 total bench points.
West Virginia got another incredible performance out of Daxter Miles Jr. who had a season high of 22 points on 6-9 from the 3 point line. Senior guard Jevon Carter played good with 15 points including 3-6 from downtown. But the West Virginia squad just didn’t get enough help from its role players to get the W.
The Kansas Jayhawks will be back in action on Monday when they host a desperate Oklahoma Sooners team. The West Virginia Mountaineers will play their next game at Baylor on Tuesday.
