Hello Steemians out there...lets talk about the sun rays, calcium and bone today.
Calcium is one of the basic elements the body needs for structural and functional efficiency of the human body. This is underscored by the fact the calcium forms 90percent of bones which form the basic structural background for laying up of other structures in the body. Without the human skeleton rigidity, movement, shape and a lot more will not be possible and just imagine life without these features.
Apart from formation of bone and teeth, calcium is needed for other metabolic processes in the body like efficient working of enzymes, release of hormones into the blood system, coordination of muscle contraction to mention a few.
Calcium is gotten predominantly in the body through our diets. It is so important that growing children and pregnant women particularly take a substantial amount of calcium in their diets. This is due to the high rate of bone formation in children and the utilization of calcium to form the bony skeleton of the baby in the pregnant woman. Dietary supplements are often necessary in these conditions and are often helpful in other conditions like osteoporosis where the is decrease amount of calcium in the bone.
How does sunlight relate to this post?
Well what if I told you your body has a role to play despite adequate dietary supply of calcium?
Calcium absorption and calcium loss from the body is a dynamic process that must be balanced at all times to ensure proper bone functionality and other calcium metabolism in the body. Vitamin D helps the stomach to absorb calcium in our diets into blood while it helps to prevent bone loss of calcium. Vitamin D is one of the few vitamins that the body can produce.
It does this by the action of sunlight on 7 dehydrocholesterol which is present in the skin. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to myriads of bone problems and calcium metabolism dysfunction particularly in temperate areas with less amount of Sun rays.
