I've not visited Dead Followers in a while. You can check if your followers are actually active. I think that's actually a pretty good retention rate.
Another cool one checks who muted you. I'm not that bothered, but it's only a few anyway.
What matters are the real users who make real comments and honestly curate posts. I'm not into buying or selling votes. I know it's tough for new users to make anything, but I can say that I reward good comments. As my sig warns I will flag those that look like spam to me. I'll also consider voting up and resteeming good posts I see. I don't expect any reward for that as it's what we should all do. Just be sure your own posts don't get lost in a flood of resteems.
It's up to us to make Steemit a nice place to be. That means not supporting spam. If you have enough SP then consider flagging it. If you don't want to do that then you can delegate some SP to those who will. Together we can beat it. When it's not profitable then people will move on.
