Learning Requires Humility

Text: 2 Timothy 2: 14-17

Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord
that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the
hearers.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to
be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more
ungodliness.
And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and
Philetus;

It is often said that no one is an island of knowledge. But not everyone accepts this sincerely. Some people think that there is nothing new that can be explained to them from the Bible. They think they have read all parts of the Scriptures and have an answer to all topics. Yes, this may be true, but there is always a wider scope that can be reached. That is, one‘s own explanation of a Bible passage may be wrong or one's thinking may be limited to one's situation or circumstances. It is very important to search the scriptures daily with a spirit of humility, to learn a new thing or to improve on what we already know. We all need to keep doing spiritual listening.

We should be humble to learn from even those that we think do not know or people who we think are not yet old enough in the faith. It requires great humility to learn. Look beyond the mistakes, the presentation, and the grammar and get the message that God is sending to you through others. The Word of God is not only new every day, it also contains more truth that we need to discover, know and applied to our lives. True learning takes a posture of humility. Without humility there is little growth because openness to growth is predicated on not thinking we know it all. We need to be humble learners that are open to constructive feedback without defensiveness. Defensiveness keeps us from hearing what we need to bear, but an openness to feedback (whether we agree with it or not) is a sign of humility. Humility is willing to hear both encouragement and other feedback even when it is uncomfortable. Indeed, there may be some things one may never know till death, it is important that one studies well to know the ones that will help us in obtaining that divine reward.
