One of the big draws of pickleball is that it’s easier on the body compared to many other sports, especially tennis. The smaller court, lighter paddle, and slower ball speed make it a less intense workout, which is likely why it’s so popular among older adults. However, despite its low-impact reputation, I’ve started hearing from a number of friends who’ve picked up the game and are now dealing with injuries. It’s a good reminder that even seemingly low-risk activities can come with physical challenges.
For me, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve shied away from most contact sports to avoid the risk of injury. But I’m intrigued by pickleball and willing to give it a try. I’ve already purchased some beginner paddles and plan to hit the court in the coming weeks to see what all the hype is about. Its rapid growth among recreational players is undeniable, but it hasn’t quite broken through at the professional level. That said, sports with broad grassroots support often have staying power, so I wouldn't be surprised if pickleball continues to rise in popularity.
