From the prestigious Giro d'Italia to French Rugby, few things are more sought after than a pink jersey.
Paris' Stade de France shocking pink stadium seats, the Paris Rugby team unorthodox choice of pink as their jersey colour through to the hardened cyclists in the gruelling Giro d'Italia - pink has become symbolic of high performance, world class, tough as nails athletes who want nothing, but nothing more at the end of the day than a pink jersey on their finely honed and machine like bodies.
La Vie en Rose (Life in Pink) most certainly became a big thing and a sign of prestige. If I have to be absolutely honest, and from a personal perspective - things would probably not have worked out all that well for any guy in my formative years who would have pitched up in a pink rugby Jersey. Never mind a figure hugging pink spandex cycling outfit.
Today, pink is prestige. The Giro d'Italia's official website uses the following glowing description for the jersey which you and I are unlikely to be crowned with "Pink like the “Gazzetta dello Sport, like a newspaper’s page, like those leaflets handed out on the top of a hill and then laid over the stomach as a protection from the cold of the descent. Pink like a champion’s dawn. The pink jersey prerogative of the number one in the place list."
The prestigious pink jersey symbolises the values of Leadership, Triumph, Team Spirit.
