European Super League is the biggest threat to football

When I first heard George Carlin talking about the limited freedom of choice I never imagined I would of quote his words on a football related topic. That was until the Football Leaks released documents which reveal the idea of creating an “it's a big club, and you ain't in it” kind of a competition, the so-called European Super League.

The idea itself is not new and there have been rumours for a competition with the top clubs from Europe's top five leagues breaking away from their national championships to form a separate closed-circuit league of their own.

The Cinderela stories like the one Leicester City title win which reminded us why we all love football might not be possible to occur ever again. Leicester's success showed that a big budget is not always the sole necessity for a club to win trophies. The only thing that drove them was their passion and the unconditional support of their fans, no matter how small in numbers they might have been.

The idea is not only a threat for the smaller clubs from the big leagues, but also for the major clubs from the other European leagues who now are concerned for the future of the competitions like the Champions League. Although the last team from outside Spain, England, Italy and Germany to reach the Champions League final was Jose Mourinho's Porto in 2003-04, so long ago it should probably be considered a different era, nevertheless the fact that they still have chance to participate in the same competition with the “big clubs” that are aspiring the European Super League

A competition format derived from a totally different sporting culture and which would dispense relegation is really a bad news not only for the football in Europe but for the whole of football.
