Why I quit Splinterlands

why I quit splinterlands.jpg

I've been a very regular Splinterlands player. I started to play in 2018 and had up to 5 accounts that I was playing at the same time. With my main account alone, I played 44'000 battles! I've never played in the top 100 of the game but was always ranked somewhere between rank 400 and 800. My deck was very good and for a very long time I enjoyed the game very much.

After almost 6 years, I have to say that I was a bit fed up playing the game. I probably never played any other game for that long. So Splinterlands really managed to keep me for much longer than most other games. However, my motivation started to decline and I was happy to be able to delegate my daily battles to xbot. For the last year, I played only my guild battles. I've tried to play some manual games in modern as well but I simply couldn't find the time to do it on a regular basis.

With SPS prices and card prices in constant decline and also with the changes implemented, I hardly made any profit in consideration of the huge amount of money that I had invested in cards. So I hesitated to stop playing the game for quite some time but it's finally a recent proposal that made me do it...

The new Wild requirements and the season pass were the factors that made me stop

Since I'm a very old player. The majority of my cards were of older generations and I could only play them in wild. I had quite a lot of chaos cards as well which allowed me to play in modern as well but I would say that more than 70% of my cards were wild only. With the new requirements that were implemented yesterday, namely the doubling of the sps stake requirement and a season pass costing 2000 DEC for playing wild, I had the feeling that this was a kick in the gut to all the long time players. Not only would my overhead for playing the game become much higher, also the demand for my wild cards would drastically fall with these changes.

The answer to the long time debate that I had with myself regarding continuing the game became very clear as soon as I read the proposal. I have to say that I hadn't checked the proposal when it was up for votation. I stopped doing that after a while. I simply don't have time to check all these proposals. So it's probably my fault as well that I didn't vote against it. With the argument to find a solution against the bot exploit, this proposals made sure that old time players with mainly wild cards had a big disadvantage. After the monetary rewards being nerfed one after the other over time and the increased overhead for playing my wild cards, I simply don't see the point to continue.

Turning a page with some sadness

I had a great time playing SL but it's time to turn the page. Since I've started way before SPS was implemented, I made a very nice financial profit thanks to the game over the years. I'm very grateful for that. Today however, I feel that it's enough. It makes me sad but my motivation to play is low and also the return on my investment doesn't justify the money and time required to continue the adventure. In a way, I hope that the implemented changes will make the game better and fairer. I still think that Splinterlands is one of the best things on hive and I believe that it can offer many nice hours playing it. I hope that you all have a lot of fun with it and it would be great if Splinterlands could again attract more people in the future.
