Wearing one of his signature flower-splashed cowboy suits, Post Malone hit the Tonight Show couch on Monday night (Oct. 1) to talk about his upcoming Posty Fest, his love of Olive Garden and the friendly tattoo rivalry he has with pal Justin Bieber. Most importantly, he previewed a new song from the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack for the upcoming animated feature.
For the uninitiated, Malone ran down his unlikely path to fame, from his birth in upstate New York to a childhood in Texas and a move to Los Angeles at 18 that involved a brief stint in community college and then, just four years ago, writing a song with friends ("White Iverson") that helped get him discovered. "I started playing [guitar] years and years ago and then I figured it's time for me to take it to the next level," he said of his humble beginnings.
After his mom bought him a guitar for Christmas, Posty told Fallon he began watching Metallica cover videos on YouTube to learn how to play power chords. "You can sing, is that from your mom as well?" Fallon wondered. "No, that's from AutoTune," the rapper shot back with perfect comic timing as he ran down his unlikely path to fame.
Fallon also previewed 10 seconds of Malone's Spider-Verse contribution, "Sunflower," a funky, dreamy ballad that has him singing "You're a sunflower, I think your love would be too much," and asked him about the origin of his copious body ink. "We were working on Stoney and then we had a tattoo artist come through, and I was just like, 'You know what? Justin Bieber's got some tats and I love you, but I know I'm way tougher than you,'" he said, revealing that his first body art was a Playboy bunny logo on his arm. And, as you probably know, his mom does not love his ink, so for Halloween you can click here to stay on your mom's good side and get a temporary tat package featuring all of his body art.
Malone had a lot of other things to plug, including his upcoming Oct. 28 Posty Fest in Dallas and two New Year's Eve shows at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. "It's gonna be an absolute shit show," Malone joked when Fallon asked if he knew what he was doing with Posty Fest, which will feature sets from Travis Scott, Lil Skies, Ski Mask the Slump God, Tierra Whack, Saint JHN, Tyler, the Creator and more.
The rapper also went deep on one of his celebration rituals: hitting the Olive Garden. Whether it's going platinum or going undefeated (20-0) in beer pong, when something good happens, chances are you'll see Posty posting up for those bread sticks. "We hit Olive Garden and celebrate life," Malone said, shocked that Fallon had never visited the affordable pasta chain. "Let's get it on... hell yeah we're going to the Olive Garden [after the show]!"
