One of the Deadly Dozen of South Africa
Mozambique Spitting Cobra (Naja mossambica)(photo at SnakeCity)
A savanna land snake found in the Eastern and Northern part of South Africa. It is not very large, growing to a maximum length of 1,5m.
It is very dangerous and accounts for human fatalities each year.
One of three snakes of South Africa that can "spit" their venom (source of photo unknown)
This spitting is for south defense, it is not a way attack. If the venom goes into the eye, it causes great pain, and can cause permanent damage to the eye. Best thing to do if spat in the eye - wash out the venom with clean water - do not rub the eyes.
