The first ever man who had Elephant Man Syndrome was born in 1862 in England. The man had thick, lumpy skin which is similar to the elephant. For over 100 years after his death, doctors and scientists are still uncertain as to what leads to his deformities.
2. Clarkson’s Disease
This is a rare disease wherein plasma is leaking into the blood vessels, leading to patients to swell. Until now, doctors aren't sure what causes this condition.
3. Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP)
The connective tissues, tendons, and muscles are turning into bones. The condition will eventually make the person unable to completely move.
4. Pica
This condition is a desire to eating non-food items. This is not caused by certain medical conditions, but this illness can be severe and can lead to death, depending on the item you are eating.
5. Vibrio Vulnificus
This is an infection which is caused by open wound when swimming or eating raw shellfish. The symptoms here include severe abdominal pain, blistering dermatitis, intense diarrhea, and vomiting.
6. Filarial worm, Loa loa worm
This is a parasitic worm that primarily lives in the eyes, and it is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. When the worm started to infect other parts of the body, the disease is called elephantiasis.
7. Leprosy
This is an inflammation of the eyes and skin. When the condition gets worse, it can lead to the gruesome loss of body parts and eyesight.
8. Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
This condition causes extreme pain because of nervous system breakdown. The pain will eventually be so bad, leading to mental issues such as anxiety and depression.
9. Eumycetoma, Madura Foot
This is a gruesome infection wherein the fungus usually infects the feet. This will eventually lead to swelling, and then disabling.
10. Noma, Cancrum Oris
This condition causes ulcers to form in the genitals or mouth. The ulcer will damage the tissues until they no longer exist at all. This will make the patient disabled, and they have about 90 percent chance of dying from the infection.
