A Vicious Attack

Every day I inspect my veggie containers for any beastly creepies and I will remove those that I find - not kill them , just place them in an area away from my veggies.

Yesterday I did this and did not find any.

However, a few minutes later I saw a big black wasp flying around the containers - now, I do not like wasps as they often fly inside, so I stood by the door ready to waft this one away if he got too close.

He or she, was circling around the cherry tomatoes and then - wham! the wasp dived onto the growing tip of the tomato bush - and imagine my surprise when I saw that there was a green caterpillar there that was his target.

I rushed to get my phone so that I could take a photo, but the wasp was not having any of this, and I was just in time to see it carry the caterpillar away.

What really surprised me was the ferocious attack on the prey - it was really not nice to see and I actually felt sorry for the caterpillar.

I have never thought of a wasp as being something that would remove caterpillars - I actually have never given a thought to what they eat.

Anyway, the lesson that I learnt was that the wasp has better eye sight than me as I had not spotted that little caterpillar!
