Trip to Valencia de Alcántara, dolmens in Aceña de la Borrega [Eng]...

Good day community

A route that would take me to the neighbouring country, Portugal, and close to its borders with ours, from the Tagus River to the Guadiana River, has taken me to the province of Cáceres in the autonomous community of Extremadura, the town of Valencia de Alcántara and the surrounding area. Upon arriving in the region, the first thing I see are small mountains, green plains and farms of oaks, cork oaks and chestnut trees. The landscape with these green meadows bathed by some tributaries of the two large rivers gave it a very unique characteristic, it seemed to me to other landscapes further north in the country. The intention of the trip was to spend two or three days in this region since there were three specific points that I had to visit and record. I accessed this urban centre via the N-521 road from the capital of the province, Cáceres. The first thing I did upon arriving in the town of Valencia de Alcántara was to stay there since I was going to be there for at least two days before continuing my journey. They informed me about what I could see in the town but also what the most interesting spots in the region were.

Una ruta que me llevaría al país vecino, Portugal, y cercana a sus límites fronterizos con los nuestros, desde el río Tajo hasta el río Guadiana, me ha llevado a conocer en la provincia de Cáceres en la comunidad autónoma de Extremadura la población de Valencia de Alcántara y la zona de su alrededor. Al llegar a la región lo primero que veo son pequeñas montañas, llanuras verdes y fincas de encinas, alcornoques y castaños. El paisaje con esos verdes prados bañados por algunos afluentes de los dos grandes ríos le daban una característica muy singular, se me parecía a otros paisajes de más al norte del País. La intención del viaje era pasarme dos o tres días en esta región ya que había tres puntos en concreto que debía visitar y dejar constancia de ello. Accedí a este núcleo urbano por la carretera N-521 desde la capital de la provincia, Cáceres. Lo primero que hice al llegar a la población de Valencia de Alcántara fue alojarme ya que iba a estar al menos dos días antes de seguir mi viaje. Me informaron sobre lo que podía ver en la localidad pero también cuales eran los puntos más interesantes de la región.

On this first day I was going to tour the town making stops from its small bridge until arriving first at the Church of the Encarnación first, then at the convent of Santa Clara passing by some small hermitages. Then the main objective of these visits of religious and historical architecture took me to the highlight which was the church of Nuestra Señora de Roca mayor and inside its baroque altarpiece by José de Churriguera together with a painting by the illustrious of the time Luis de Morales. Both characters left in Valencia de Alcántara an important artistic legacy that has been preserved and cared for over the years.

En este primer día iba recorrer la población haciendo escalas desde su pequeño puente hasta llegar primero a la Iglesia de la Encarnación primeramente, después al convento de Santa Clara pasando por algunas pequeñas ermitas. Luego el Objetivo principal de estas visitas de arquitectura religiosa e histórica me llevo al plato fuerte que era la iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Roca mayor y dentro su retablo barroco de José de Churriguera junto con una pintura del ilustre de la época Luis de Morales. Ambos personajes dejaron en Valencia de Alcántara un legado artístico importante que ha sido conservado y cuidado a lo largo de los años.

The entire frontier fortification and the church attached to it took up almost the entire visit to the town of Valencia de Alcántara. The fortress is believed to date back to the Muslim era, as one of the towers has architectural features from that period. It is said that the castle was taken from the Muslims by the Christian order of Alcántara at the time of the reconquest of the country by Christianity. The walls and towers are preserved in very good condition. I was able to walk around the entire perimeter of the fort and see the town from all angles. It is clear that it has been very well protected and cared for by successive restorations that have preserved the original to this day.

Toda la fortificación frontera y la iglesia pegada a ella ocupo casi toda la totalidad de esta visita a la villa de Valencia de Alcántara. La fortaleza se cree datada en la época musulmana ya que una de las torres presenta características de la arquitectura de esa época. Se dice del castillo que les fue arrebatado a los musulmanes por la orden cristiana de Alcántara en la época de la reconquista del país por el cristianismo. Las muralla y torres se conservan en muy buen estado pude recorrer todo el perímetro del fuerte y ver la localidad desde todos los ángulos.se nota que ha sido muy protegido y cuidado por sucesivas restauraciones que han preservado el original hasta nuestros días.

I began to receive information about this whole region and it became clear to me how ancient it was, with very old settlements, Paleolithic and Neolithic, which I would later visit in Aceña de la Borrega, a countryside area just a few kilometres from Valencia de Alcántara, which houses important archaeological remains that attest to this antiquity. The dolmens of Valencia de Alcántara and Mellizo are located here and are protected by a visitable enclosure. It is one of the things that has always impressed me on my travels, seeing these archaeological remains made by those primitive men so many years ago.

Empecé a recibir información sobre toda esta comarca y me quedo claro la antigüedad de la misma con asentamientos muy antiguos, paleolíticos y neolíticos, que luego visitaría en la Aceña de la Borrega, una zona de campiña cercana a muy pocos kilómetros de Valencia de Alcántara, que alberga importantes restos arqueológicos que atestiguan esa antigüedad. Los dólmenes de Valencia de Alcántara y el de Mellizo están aquí ubicados y protegidos por un recinto visitable. Es una de las cuestiones que siempre me ha impresionado en mis viajes el ver estos restos arqueológicos hechos por aquellos hombres primitivos desde hace tantos años.
