Born River Jude Bottom, he was the son of Arlyn, a secretary from the Bronx, and John Bottom, a carpenter. The pair first crossed paths in California in 1968 and later became itinerant fruit pickers. Their journey led them to the Children of God religious group. With such an eclectic background, it's no wonder River would go on to make significant waves in Hollywood.

Early Life and Career

Growing up, Phoenix experienced a unique childhood. By the age of two, he was living in South America, with his father serving as the Archbishop of Venezuela for their religious group. However, by 1977, the family relocated to the United States, adopting the last name "Phoenix." They settled in Florida, staying with River's maternal grandparents, before eventually moving to Los Angeles.

Phoenix's entry into the world of entertainment was no accident. His parents encouraged their children to explore the film industry. At just ten years old, River was already acting professionally on television. He quickly made his film debut, and it wasn't long before he experienced box-office successes. One of his early iconic roles was as Chris Chambers in "Stand by Me" in 1986.

His portrayal of Danny Pope in "Running on Empty" brought him to the forefront of Hollywood's young talents, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Phoenix continued to impress, delivering unforgettable performances like his role as Mike in "My Own Private Idaho."
