DIY Repairs on Polaris Ranger XP 1000 Heater

Been having an issue with the heater and fan blower not working in my 2021 Polaris Ranger XP 1000 UTV. Have been scouring the google pages and Polaris help sites now for a couple weekends with no solution found. I use this UTV with a plow for snow removal, which is a critical safety thing up here in Vermont, which has the most snow of any U.S. State. It also gets cold. Next week, temperatures are supposed to drop to -20F (-29C), and it's really, really, nice to have that cab heated when it gets that cold, not to mention it keeps the windshield defrosted so I can see where I'm plowing.

I finally figured it out this weekend. As normal 4-6 hours of research and testing and troubleshooting for what ended up being a 20 second fix. So, I had this heater installed at the factory when I bought it. It has worked great for months, then all of a sudden just didn't work one day.

My first thought was like many, it's most likely a fuse. So, I checked the fuse (and all the others), they looked ok. I then replaced the ones related for this, just to be sure. No joy. Searching others posts said look for an inline fuze or disconnected/broken wires or wires chewed by mice. I thought this may be likely, as we had other mice damage before I put out the new traps. I searched and searched, but couldn't find any other inline fuse or wire damage.

The main fuse box for this model is located under the passenger seat, center console. That's it there in the bottom center of picture with the cover off so you can see the different colored fuses.

Underneath the cover is the chart that shows which fuse is for what. Here's a closer picture.

Those little black square things are called Relays, that are kind of like fuses, but have four prongs as they do other functions as well (beyond my knowledge). That was suggested as a potential issue, so I replaced that as well. I was able to get four of them online for about $15, but had to wait a week. Still no joy.

Back to Internet searching, more and more. Nothing specific to this year model, so I kept searching for other models, other heater brands, etc. hoping somewhere would provide a clue. I saw a couple posts about inline fuse being hidden behind the anti-freeze fill, or behind the heater blower. So, I began tracing wires from the heater blower, nothing spotted under the dash, nothing near the anti-freeze.
Then I found a more detailed Service Manual that showed a picture of installing the heater. This showed the wiring harness under the hood, and having an extension off of it. Maybe this could contain the fuse I thought.

First I took off the hood by just twisting the two locknuts there in the top part of hood. I found this part identified with the yellow arrow clipped to center of compartment. Could that contain fuses?

Aha! That little black box contained a Relay and two fuses. A 20 amp fuse and a 5 amp fuse. Upon inspection, they were obviously blown. A quick swap with new ones and the heater and blower fan working again. Woohoo!

Now, hopefully no other underlying issues that will cause them blow them again. At least next time, I will have spares, and won't take me hours to track it down!
