Yes, this is actually the first time I EVER sit down and play Gran Turismo 2 in my life, more specifically the Simulation/Career mode. I always heard of this game at places and thought it looked really good for a PS1 game, but I never ended playing it before years ago since I was always inclined towards arcade-styled racers with crazy drifting over trying to take in the subtle substance in something as grounded as this.
And I still think arcade racers are great, of course, but this is something that was definitely an interesting new experience for me as someone that only really played arcade racers otherwise.
...That definitely started showing when I got my hands on the wheel for the first time, but there's more to everything before that.

...Yep, there's nothing.
So I was thinking "okay, I have to go on races now, right?"
But you DO need something in your Garage to drive after all...and a license to go with that car.
So I went to the B License Tests and be faced with my first obstacle: Braking at the right place in the right time.
"Okay, that sounds pretty basic, let's do this-"
Oh. Okay, I have to brake earlier so that I don't overshoot the goal, go it. So here we go...WHAT-
Okay.
So I got it right at the third try, Just right enough for a Bronze medal.
This would be easier to show in a video, but basically in most if not all braking challenges for the B-License (and the A-License) had me fail at least once or twice because I kept overshooting or braking too early due to never having really played this before and not getting the memo that different car speeds with different acceleration speeds...have different braking speeds too.
But hey, at least it was possible to get around the rest of the challenges with one or no fails to account for, though I spun out quite a few times in some of them that involved doing turns while starting at high speed...and like a Reddit moderator, touching grass for just a bit over half a second means death.
But eventually...got it all done (bronze and silver medals, didn't get a single Gold medal) and got my B-License!
So I checked some of the car shops in the cities in-game...and most that I had seen asked for 20 thousand or more credits, but you always only begin with 10. I ended up thinking "okay, maybe I have to do the A-License trials to get more money", so I went and did that.
...It was an even more bumpy ride as there were more turns involved into the equation...which meant more stupid stuff happening with braking ultra-late.
After more trial-and-error though (and more bronze/silver medals), the license was mine.
Then I realized that all of this had not given me a single drop of money. But after waiting for the minute-long saving screen to go through, I went to the East City to check the cars sold there if there were less expensive ones...and I saw something very striking on the car dealers here:
There was an used car shop area. I could get to buy something with these 10k credits in this specific place, and now I was left with two serious choices to pick between the cars I saw in this Toyota dealer:
A Toyota Trueno Apex (because of Initial D, of course)...
And a Celica GT-Four (because of SEGA Rally and the rally GT Four that game had in it; I later checked the Arcade mode and that Rally GT-Four model is actually available for Rally races).
After literally spending 4 minutes trying to decide on which car to pick, I decided to take home the Celica.
It looked like it had more horsepower, looked awesome, and thought that it would be great for having faster races earlier...though the devil was in the 4WD driving model, as it is harder to control than other type of cars.
And on my very first race....it became noticeable.
Yep, my first race with my brand new car, and I got slapped with a 5th place, with gave me a grand total of...500 credits. And the Celica costed me around 9k out of the 10k I started with.
But the game allowed me to do the race again, so I got on that...
I was doing okay on the first lap, but I also missed the mark at the first turn of the second lap, at first leaving me behind the pack until I got to the downhill where I could gain some serious speed and get ahead of three racers and almost get ahead out of the second place racer.
The key word here is...almost.
It might have not been first place, but at least got more credits than before with the third place finish, and at that time it was already quite late so I decided to hop off the car, and hit the exit sign to finally sleep on my bed, knowing that I could finally get to give Gran Turismo 2 the first ride I wanted to do all of these days after being busy with stuff.
This was played in the night of January 27th, 2022 (and this was written the afternoon of the day after it); I'm likely going to play more GT2 later on, so until then, I hope you enjoyed this driving beginner's first misadventures on one of the oldest racing classics ever made!

Esto sería más fácil de mostrar en un video, pero básicamente en la mayoría si no todos los desafíos de frenado para la Licencia B (y la Licencia A) me hizo fallar al menos una o dos veces porque seguía sobrepasando o frenando demasiado pronto debido a que nunca había jugado a esto antes y no había entendido que las diferentes velocidades de los coches con diferentes velocidades de aceleración... tienen diferentes velocidades de frenado también.
Pero bueno, al menos era posible superar el resto de los retos con uno o ningún fallo a tener en cuenta, aunque hice bastantes trompos en algunos de ellos que implicaban hacer giros arrancando a alta velocidad... y como un moderador de Reddit, tocar la hierba durante poco más de medio segundo significa la muerte.
Pero al final... lo conseguí todo (medallas de bronce y plata, no conseguí ni una sola medalla de oro) y ¡conseguí mi carnet B!
Así que comprobé algunas de las tiendas de coches de las ciudades del juego... y la mayoría de las que había visto pedían 20 mil créditos o más, pero siempre empiezas sólo con 10. Acabé pensando "vale, quizá tenga que hacer las pruebas de la Licencia A para conseguir más dinero", así que fui y lo hice.
...Fue un viaje aún más accidentado ya que había más curvas involucradas en la ecuación...lo que significaba más cosas estúpidas sucediendo con frenadas ultra-tarde.

Pero el juego me permitió repetir la carrera, así que me puse a ello...
Iba bien en la primera vuelta, pero también me pasé de frenada en la primera curva de la segunda vuelta, al principio dejándome atrás del pelotón hasta que llegué a la bajada donde pude ganar bastante velocidad y ponerme por delante de tres corredores y casi adelantar al segundo clasificado.
La palabra clave aquí es ... casi.
Puede que no fuera el primer puesto, pero al menos conseguí más créditos que antes con el tercer puesto, y a esa hora ya era bastante tarde así que decidí bajarme del coche, y darle a la señal de salida para finalmente dormir en mi cama, sabiendo que por fin podría darle a Gran Turismo 2 el primer paseo que quería hacer todos estos días después de estar ocupado con cosas.
