Where you are on the political spectrum might change with the times, but Liberal principles don't change.

I really don't enjoy discussing where people fall on the traditional, linear political spectrum. Any spectrum that says that Hitler and Stalin were polar opposites shouldn't be respected.

Still, if we're gonna use this bullshit model, we have to be clear that by historical definitions, the extremes haven't moved. What's moved is how many people flock to the extremes.

Still, there is an ideological shift that has happened which is that the left has separated itself from liberalism. That's what people like Bill Maher, Joe Rogan, and, yes, Elon Musk are saying.

Just ten years ago if you were against gay marriage you were right to center left on that issue. Even Obama was opposed to gay marriage until his second term. I took the position in favor on the basis of supporting equal treatment under the law. So, I guess I was to the left of to the left of center there. Then the SCOTUS decided that gay marriage should be recognized and the left started pushing to get the government involved in forcing people to participate in something that they view to be wrong. I didn't move; but, suddenly I be became a right-winger because I'm a liberal.

Free speech is and always has been a liberal. A lot of my life has been seeing conservatives trying to ban flag burning. Obviously, that hasn't changed much and I attacked Trump for making those statements. Still, is the left that has defending attacks and cancellations of anybody who even dares to talk to a conservative. When students put a liberal professor in the hospital for daring to talk to Charles Murray, the liberals and conservatives spoke out against the students and the leftists called us right-wingers.

It used to be that we were fighting the right against discrimination in the laws based on race and sex. Now, when liberals and conservatives oppose Ibram X Kendi's ideas of solving historical discrimination based on race with new racial discrimination, if we oppose his underlying goal of communism, if we even say that sex is a real thing, we're right-wingers. By the terms of the left, RBG was a right-winger.

It didn't matter that Tulsi Gabbard and Joe Rogan and the like endorsed Bernie Sanders, the left has made them all right wingers.

The thing is, I don't care where you put me on the bullshit spectrum. I'm a liberal. Liberals have principles and those principles don't change with the times - they only change when we're shown to be wrong.
