The “ex Starter Decks Generations” have finally been revealed!

As posted in April, there will be nine decks featuring two Pokemon ex from each generation. The decks will release on November 22nd for 850 yen each.

Pikachu ex & Snorlax ex
Lugia ex & Tyranitar ex
Kyogre ex & Blaziken ex
Dialga ex & Lucario ex
Reshiram ex & Amoongus ex
Xerneas ex & Noivern ex
Tapu Koko ex & Mimikyu ex
Zacian ex & Alcremie ex
Koraidon ex & Paldean Clodsire ex

The thing is that the Pokemon ex cards from these starter decks are not that good in the competitive sense. I show screenshots of them with no commentary.

There are also reprints of the card Professor's Research. The different version show a different Professor from each region from the anime. You have Oak, Elm, Birch, Rowan, Sycamore, Juniper, Magnolia, Kukui and Sada. (Where is Professor Turo?)

The Few Cards That Have Competitive Potential

Here are the few cards from the decks that can be competitive in the TCG.

Blaziken ex

This Blaziken's attack of Burning Assault requires one Fire Energy and one Colourless Energy to do 200 damage. The drawback of the Burning Assault attack is that it cannot attack next turn (unless it is moved to Bench). What makes up for the somewhat subpar attack is its ability. Overflowing Spirit allows you once per turn to attach 1 Basic Energy from your discard pile to 1 of your Pokemon.

Since this would be released in April 2025 or later I think the stadium Magma Basin would be rotated out of the regulation format. By then you would have G, H and I cards being legal.

Blaziken ex could be good in a fire Themed deck and in a non-fire Deck that makes use of its ability.

Noivern ex

For some reason I think this Noivern ex is good. I think it is the Colourless typing that appeals to me. You can splash this attacker in any deck in theory.

Its Strafe attack does 50 damage for one Colourless Energy plus Noivern switches with 1 Pokemon from your Bench. It is a hit and run attack. Sonic Blast as the second attack is okay. For three colourless Energy you deal 220 damage with 30 damage to itself.

As Noivern ex is Colourless, it does combo with the item card Glass Trumpet. On the other hand as it is not a Dragon type it has weakness. The weakness is Lightning.

Tapu Koko ex

Tapu Koko ex seems somewhat playable in a Miraidon ex theme deck. This has 200 HP, no retreat cost and a decent attack.

The Thunder Connect attack does 60 base damage for the cost of one Lightning Energy and one Colourless Energy. It does 20 more damage for each of your Benched Pokemon. If you have a full Bench of 5 Pokemon then Tapu Koko's attack does 160 damage. With Area Zero Underdepths Stadium in play with a maximum 8 Benched Pokemon then you have the maximum damage of 220 damage. This is from 60 + 20 x 8 = 60 + 160.

Toedscruel

If deck space is available I think this Toedscruel can come in handy. Having two less retreat cost on Basic Pokemon and Evolution Pokemon is good for changing attackers. You would not really use this Toedscruel for attacking. I think this Toedscruel is more in a control/stall deck than in a deck that attacks.
