Many summers ago, I was sitting on a deck when I saw a small vivid red dot moving along on the carpet. It was the first velvet mite I had ever seen, and was in awe by the beautiful coloring and soft, plushy hairs. Here are a few shots of the mite.
I was worried the carpet might take away from how bright the creature was, so i grabbed the closest thing I could find to put it on, which was a very small, maybe 2x3 inch tupperware lid.
I miss that house sometimes. Being near the woods, it had the widest variety of spiders I had ever seen. It had frogs, deer, turkeys and all sorts of insects and arachnids. Unfortunately, because of the deer, the area was also infested with ticks. But it was so, so peaceful.
