Philippines: State Of The Nation Address (SONA) 2017

Earlier today, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte delivered his second State of the Nation Address. It also marked the first year of a presidency highlighted by war on drugs and corruption, shift in foreign policy, terrorism in Mindanao, and controversies with his behavior and speech.

Here are the highlights of his SONA:

  • On drug war - It will be unrelenting. “I have resolved that no matter how long it takes, the fight against illegal drugs will continue because it is the root cause of suffering.” “The fight will be unrelenting… despite international and local pressures, the fight will not stop.”

  • On his declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao - "I declared martial law in Mindanao because I believe that was the fastest way to quell the rebellion at the least cost of lives and properties."

  • On environment and mining - "Sustainable, responsible, regulated environment is what we require." "Declare your correct income, pay your right taxes", referring to mining companies.

  • On human rights and his critics - "Do not blabber and talk about human rights... What have you done in the name of human rights?"

  • On being a bully -"Talagang bully ako (I am a real bully) especially to the enemies of the state"

  • On his tenure as a President- "I do not intend to go beyond my term."

Despite heavy criticisms from his detractors for his behavior and leadership style, Duterte or popularly known as Digong remains popular with the Filipinos with almost 8 of 10 saying they were "satisfied" with the President's performance.

Full text of his speech is not available as of this time. Maybe they're trying to edit out the profanities and adlibs. :D
