This is my entry into this month’s PHC Top 3 contest.
This Months Topic is: Top 3 Comedy Movies
Which reminds me... what do you call an anti-imperialist group that isn't called either the Peoples Front of Judia or the Judian Peoples Front? Drum roll please....
Splitters.... (or the Popular Front of Judia)
2: Office Space is one of those comedy films that everyone can realate to.... well everyone who has worked in an office anyway. The characters are excellently defined to fulfill some of the typical office archetypes. Bill Lumbergh the passive aggressive boss, Milton Waddams the office stooge and Peter Gibbons (main character) the guy who doesn't give a sh@t. That was me btw, when I worked in an office, except I didn't hook up with Jennifer Aniston 😢 😂 As with most great farcical comedies, these stereotypes are pushed to the extreme, holding a mirror up to how we all act in that most unnatural of places; the office.
In brief, the premise of the story revolves around Peter and his best friend Samir the IT guy, scamming the company out of a fortune by removing fractions of a cent from every company transaction. As their scheme starts to work, the movie descends into more and more outrageous instances of 'just don't give a fck' moments. Check out the clip above where Peter describes his typical day to the two Bob's from the human resources department. Oh yeah, and check out the clip below for the ultimate in shiver-up-the-spine moments for anyone who has ever worked in a crappy office environment. Warning, the video below is not suitable for kids.... there may be some swearing and scenes of man-printer violence 😅
Ha ha, I also have to admit I watched this clip more than once on the day my contract at an office ended and I made the promise to myself never to work in that type of environment again. Please, do yourself a favor, go watch this film right now.
3: Napoleon Dynamite is a film that spawned a new style. Arguably the first comedy to bring geek sheek to the mainstream, I just love the deadpan delivery that permeates the main characters performance. There is also the odd slapstick moment, which are even funnier when they come out of nowhere. Often with comedy, contrast magnifies effect, and this is certainly true with Napoleon Dynamite. The icing on the cake is at the end of this film where we get the ultimate redemption moment. As Napoleon takes the stage at the school talent contest and struts his funky stuff to Canned Heat By - Jamiroquai in support of his socially awkward friend Pedro's campaign for class president. I don't want to ruin the effect of the final moments of this scene, please do check it out below 🙂
