Definition Paragraph

In a classic paragraph of definition, the first step is to classify the thing within a class or group and the second step is to differentiate the word from other members of its class. However, your paragraph of definition ought to offer more than just the basic points of differentiation. You should also provide illustrations, examples, and comparisons of the term being defined to terms that might be familiar to your reader. This additional information helps your reader understand and assimilate the information you are offering. The process is often called the extending of the definition. Finally a word of warning about constructing definitions: A fundamental rule is that a definition must not be circular. A useful definition does not define a term by using a related form of the term itself. To define the word interesting by saying that it causes interest means nothing unless the reader knows that interest means absence or removal of pain.
