Turkish police detain over 20 HDP hunger strikers in Diyarbakir (video)

Police in the south-eastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir raided the local offices of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) on Monday, and detained over 20, mostly female party members, who were participating in a hunger strike in solidarity with prisoners.

Officers equipped with riot shields blocked the street as HDP members were bundled out of the offices into waiting police vehicles.

The hunger strike was reportedly staged in support of imprisoned HDP parliamentary representative Leyla Guven, who is herself on hunger strike in protest against the isolation of the leader of the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), Abdullah Ocalan, who has been held on the prison island of Imrali by the Turkish government since 1999.
