Elegant and beautiful, or nasty and invasive? That is the question I left with my last post on this subject. I went over in that post the history of these birds being introduced here in the eastern US. As well as being non-native, they are growing in numbers and they have a nasty attitude towards the rightful residences of wildlife. I promised to extend that piece and show ya'll how they behave.
Swan Chasing this poor goose around.
This sight is all too common this time of the year. These swans will spend the entire day chasing geese and ducks in circles. Even though it's on the rare side they have been seen killing what they are chasing (aside from the indirect harming via being ran out of their home). While many think they are cute and as I mentioned in my last post I don't think that they are the least bit cute. In fact, I am glad that the NY DEC is now making efforts to reduce/ control their population.
It's not out of hatred but love of wildlife, an imbalance could be detrimental for the native species. I am not willing to let hundreds if not thousands of animals, plants, or other organisms perish for this non native nuisance.
