Elis Regina Carvalho Costa (Porto Alegre, March 17, 1945 - São Paulo, January 19, 1982) was a Brazilian singer. Known for her vocal competence, musicality and stage presence, is considered by many critics the best popular singer in Brazil from the 1960s to the early 1980s; For many, the best Brazilian singer of all time, compared to singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday. With the successes of Falso Brilhante (1975-1977) and Transversal do Tempo (1978), Elis Regina innovated the musical spectacles in the country. She was married to Ronaldo Bôscoli, with whom she had João Marcello Bôscoli (1970); In 1972, married the pianist César Camargo Mariano, with whom he had two children: Pedro Camargo Mariano (1975) and Maria Rita Camargo Mariano (1977). Acclaimed in Brazil and abroad, Elis Regina died at the height of her career, at age 36, of an overdose of cocaine.

Elis was the first great artist to emerge from the music festivals in the 1960s and took off from the aesthetics of Bossa Nova by the use of its vocal extension and its drama. Initially, its style was influenced by the singers of the radio, especially Ângela Maria. Elis Regina sang many genres: from MPB, through bossa nova, samba, rock and jazz. Interpreting songs like Magdalena, Águas de Março, Behind the Door, Like Our Parents, The Drunk and the Equilibrist, Querelas do Brasil, recorded moments of happiness, love, sadness, patriotism. Throughout his career, he has also sung songs by artists still unknown, such as Milton Nascimento, Ivan Lins, Belchior, Renato Teixeira, Aldir Blanc and João Bosco, helping to launch and publicize his works​,​ Impelling them in the Brazilian music scene. Among other partnerships, the duets he had with Jair Rodrigues, Tom Jobim, Wilson Simonal, Rita Lee, Milton Nascimento and Gilberto Gil are famous. With her second husband, the pianist César Camargo Mariano, devoted a long work of great creativity and musical consistency.
