This Is Me - The Greatest Showman

Every unforgettable musical pair a great story with amazing music. I would also think that usually there's a wide range of genres included to keep the story interesting. I would think that everyone would fall in love with the ballads, which usually are the hits like - 'Tomorrow' from Annie and 'Memory' from Cats just to name a few. Interestingly, there's a genre that always never fail to leave a mark - the anthem-like song. What would be an anthem-like song? 'We Will Rock You' by Queen would be the best example I can think of. 'Do You Hear The People Sing?' from Les Miserables left a lasting impression on me.

'This Is Me' plays a similar role in The Greatest Showman. Aside from the opening number, this is where the chorus gets involved, and the sheer volume just gives you the goosebumps! Here's a clip of the cast belting out a raw version (starts around the 0:59 mark). The emotions they put in just leaves you speechless. You'll never come across a simpler anthem than this, only containing 1 single syllable - 'oh'!

I am not a stranger to the dark
Hide away, they say
'Cause we don't want your broken parts
I've learned to be ashamed of all my scars
Run away, they say
No one'll love you as you are

But I won't let them break me down to dust
I know that there's a place for us
For we are glorious

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me

Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh

Another round of bullets hits my skin
Well, fire away 'cause today, I won't let the shame sink in
We are bursting through the barricades and
Reaching for the sun (we are warriors)
Yeah, that's what we've become (yeah, that's what we've become)

I won't let them break me down to dust
I know that there's a place for us
For we are glorious

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me

Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh
This is me

and I know that I deserve your love
(Oh-oh-oh-oh) 'cause there's nothing I'm not worthy of
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh)
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
This is brave, this is proof
This is who I'm meant to be, this is me

Look out 'cause here I come (look out 'cause here I come)
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum (marching on, marching, marching on)
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I'm gonna send a flood
Gonna drown them out
Oh
This is me

The lady that took the lead in the song is Keala Settle. She's indeed a powerhouse! She played an interesting role in the movie - Lettie Lutz, a bearded lady.

The original music is about 90 bars. Personally, I like to avoid page-turning (whether hardcopy or on my iPad) as much as I can. iReal Pro can only contain about 12 lines of music, which is around 48 bars. In my attempt to be efficient with my scoring/charting, I've fully utilized all the music signs/symbols that I can afford to, without confusing myself when I'm performing! ;)
