Coco is Disney's latest movie release which was shown last November 2017. I have heard a lot of good reviews about the movie so my little boy and I just watched the movie last weekend.
The movie is generally about family belief and pursuing your passion. It highlighted on the Mexican family holiday of giving respects to their dead, the Día de Muertos. They have their Ofrenda a ritual altar where they put up the pictures of their dead loved ones and their offerings.
The Rivera's are a family that has a shoemaking business and HATES music. Their hatred started when their great great grandfather who was a musician left the family for his passion for music. That was when their great great grandmother banished music from their life and learned to make shoes to earn for the family.
Coco was the daughter of their great great grandmother.
Two generations later their great great grandson, Miguel, who has the passion for music wanted to break away from his family's hatred for music and dreams of being like the most famous musician of Mexico, Ernest De La Cruz.
He wanted to secretly sign up for a singing contest held at their plaza but when he was about to go he discovered that the torn picture of his great great grandfather at the ofrenda has the same guitar as Ernesto's. His grand mother was so furious when she saw Miguel holidng his made-up replica of Ernesto's guitar and broke it. So despite his family's objections, he went to the singing contest concluding that Ernest De La Cruz was his great great grandfather.
Since he doesn't have a guitar because his grand mother broke it he begged to some of the contestants to let him borrow a guitar and got rejected so he decided to steal the guitar of Ernest De La Cruz himself which was on his mausoleum.
When he stole the guitar, he became invisible to everyone. He can now see and can be seen only by all skeletal ghosts of the dead. Then he saw his dead relatives including his great great grandmother who started it all.
His relatives were so puzzled how Miguel where able to see them as if he was also dead but not totally because he is not a skeleton like them. He was able to visit the land of the dead which was an amazing and beautiful place.
There he was able to discover much about his family, about his passion for music and about Ernest De La Cruz.
The movie shows how a family should truly accept and recognize each other's uniqueness and learning to forgive because that is how a family should always be.
They way they portrayed the Mexican culture in a colorful and charming way was exquisite! Get your tissues ready because I admit it was a tear jerking movie. I would definitely recommend it anyone!
