CHILL PILL Red Sky Monday Mixtape Vol9

IMG_1922.JPG

Music can evoke many emotions and can release many as well. You can release some tension and anger by singing along to your favorite screamcore band or you can calm your bones with some extremely chilled sounds. The outcome is often the same whatever your musical taste. Music has the power to soothe and exalt and leave your mind in a better state. It's why music is as ancient as human history itself.
This weeks selection is for your horizontal enjoyment. Kick up your feet, put on some headphones and chill. Mondays can be hectic. If you had a stressful day take a breather and hopefully your mind will come out the other side a little better than it went in.

CORNELIUS - Tone Twilight Zone

Cornelius is one of my favorite multi instrumentalist producers. Hailing from Japan his music carves through a wide scope of genres from thrashy metal to blissful acoustic guitar driven ambient as exemplified in this track. Love the walking fingers video for this one too.

HENRY MANCINI - Lujon

Henry Mancini had a interesting life and career. He went to Juilliard school, had a stint in the army which included helping liberate an Austrian Concentration camp at the end of WW2, was an arranger for the Glenn Miller orchestra and wrote many famous movie scores and songs like Moon River, The Pink Panther theme and Breakfast at Tiffanys. Lujon first grabbed my ears when it was used in a dream sequence scene in The Big Lebrowski. It has a strange power and I never fail to feel better after listening to it than before. Always improves my mood and melts away cares.

APHEX TWIN - Rhubarb

Aphex has been more recently famous for some harsher and beat driven glitchy electronica but his Selected Ambient Works 1 and 2 have stood the test of time as some of the best ambient electronic music of all time. The tracks always have complex layers of unique sounds but also always maintain a beautiful simplicity.

SEEFEEL - More Like Space

Seefeel use spacey droney foot gazing guitars, dub bass, buried vocals and electronics to trancey effect on their earlier material. Anything they made in the early nighties before making their way to Warp records remains stuff that I frequently find myself diving back in to.

THE ORB - Spanish Castles In Space

The Orb were and still are stalwarts of the ambient electronica and EDM scenes. This track from their classic first album features bass by Guy Pratt who played as a session and live bassist with Pink Floyd, Bowie, Madonna and Michael Jackson amongst others. The 3 note bass line is startling simple but drives the track supplemented by higher bass improv, synths, all manner of samplism and twinkling mellow piano loops. 15 minutes to drift away to in a darkened room.
