She knew where to find Gipson, Janet thought. If the Island had been double in size, she’d still have known where to find him. Janet acknowledged that Gipson was hiding someone where. Having gone to his house in search of him everywhere looked as if no one ever lived there for many years. That home, in the small, slightly dilapidated cottage he lived in near the beach. Because she felt it would be a strategic error to go after him too soon, as smart as he is, perhaps it will keep him alerted.
The police detective Cardwell Morris had always tended to the light legal matters Janet needed. He admired her greatly. Cardwell listened to her story, envision deep into the story, and had no doubt she was telling the truth. He was relieved, because he, like most folks in town, had heard the constant rumour about Gipson’s involvement in the murder. Being that Gipson is an ex-convict.
Cardwell drove her down to the club, and there they made some investigations. Cardwell requested to see the bartender, who told him on everything that happened that very day. The bartender did not deny the fact that he saw Janet; a little tipsy. He went further to say that he didn’t see him with a man, but while living the premises, he noticed that he was not the one driving the car, he couldn’t picture whom the person was.
Cardwell drove Janet down to the police station and sat with her while she explained further things to him. Detective Cardwell listened carefully, studied Gipson’s record, and asked her if she would video a statement. Meanwhile, one of the fingerprints revealed Gipson Hart as one of the bearers, and the other fingerprint is yet to be identified.
Detective Cardwell watched through a window as Janet was placed in a chair, faced the direction of the camera, and answered Cardwell’s questions. After all that, the detective gave her the only options she has, to provide Gipson or be jailed. This sounded like “Bombast” to Janet, but at the same time, she knew that Detective Cardwell was trying all he could to help her get out of the case. He believed her, but he has to obey the law and maintain his job. Detective Cardwell has pledged his support in finding Gipson and bringing him to justice no matter what it might cost him.
Driving home, Janet was relieved and confident that she had laid the matter to rest, if not, at least for the meantime. If the video camera was loaded with a tape, it was never seen. If Detective Cardwell made a report of the interview, it was never produced in legal proceedings that followed.
Along the road, he diverted and headed to her brother’s house to pick up her daughter. She had spent almost all her day at the police station. She decided that she’s would rather relocate to California, to give her more time to think of how to find Gipson. And probably have a peace of mind for the meantime. “The task isn’t going to be easy,” she said.
She hurriedly stormed out of the car, his brother Michael peeped through the window to see who parked the car. He opened the door and said “sister, what’s going on? What are you not telling me?” Without much waste of time, she narrated her ordeal to him and requested to live with her daughter. “Okay, I will call the lawyer. I just spoke with mum few minutes ago. Please call me as soon as you get to California.
Janet left immediately with her daughter who was curious to know what was going on. She got to her house and ordered her daughter to pack his clothes and get ready as they are relocating to another California.
“Mum, why the sudden change of location? Why are you so depressed these past days? Please, Mummy, tell me!” She cried out. Janet dropped her bag on the table and held her daughter close to her shoulder, and then she whispered in her ear “My angel is best you don’t know this for now.” She consoled. “But Mummy, I don’t want to leave my school and my friends here. I will miss them a lot.” Janet embraced her one more time. “I’m sorry we have to” she said and left for the bathroom.
